‘But why? I thought she was fond of you. Why would she end it?’

‘Because she’s not like us, mum. She’s law abiding. She comes from a respectable family. Her dad’s a solicitor, her brother’s a doctor. I haven’t told her my dad’s a crook. I haven’t dared and if she finds out, I’ll likely lose her. But if she learns Dad has put a job out on the attackers, then I will definitely lose her.’ George stared across the table at his mother, desperate for her to understand.

‘Well, then.’ Sally clasped her hands and pursed her lips as she thought. ‘You’ve got to tell Millie the truth before the job goes down.’

‘Why? How can that help? I might still lose her only sooner.’

‘And if she loves you, she may stick with you.’

‘Until Dad has the kids beaten up.’

‘I’ll speak to him.’ Sally stood and took the dinner plates to the side. ‘I’ll explain to Chas how you feel about Millie. Maybe with that information, he might reconsider. I can’t promise, though.’
