That lifted my chin. “I was chosen?” The comments that had burned my ears had made me think the Cabal had been mistaken when they’d marked me.

“Yes, you were chosen, and the winner was most surprising.”

“When will I be bred?”

“Given you’re the first Sebastian has ever bid on, I don’t know.”

The bidder who’d won had a name, but that did nothing for me. We approached the elevator.

“Where are we going?” I asked as the door began to open.

Serena answered over her shoulder as she stepped in. “I’m going to deliver you to his home.”

“That won’t be necessary. I’ll take her from here.”

That voice. Even without the filtering mask, I knew it. I turned to see a man wearing a dark red outfit. The commander, but without his helmet. He had blondish hair, brown eyes and a square jaw, and he remained as big as I recalled, even out of armor.

Oddly, I felt relief, which led to me blurting, “When would you like to get the breeding done with?”

Judging by his scowl, I said the wrong thing.

Serena coughed. “Ahem. Perhaps I should have explained that intercourse takes place in private.”

“In his cubicle?” I clarified.

His jaw tensed. “Can we not discuss this now?”

“I am just trying to understand what my job is.”

It wasn’t Serena or the commander who said, “To drain his sac until he finally learns how to smile.”

I wouldn’t have thought the commander could get any more rigid. He pivoted slowly and glowered at the man who’d spoken. The commander growled, “Don’t you have better things to do than annoy your betters, Levi?”

“Not really.” The younger male grinned. “And am I ever glad I chose to come. Never thought I’d see the day you’d use some of your credits to finally carry on your genes.”

“Go away.” The commander strode past Levi in dismissal.

Not that the man appeared repentant. Levi grinned at me. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Citizen J891.”

The young man winced. “That’s not a name.”

The commander whirled and frowned at me. “Why aren’t you following?”

“Because you never told me to.”

His brows rose.

Serena edged closer and whispered, “You’re supposed to go with Sebastian.”

“So we can go somewhere private for the breeding.” I nodded.

Levi began to cough. Was he ill?

As for the commander, he glowered and whirled, snapping, “Come.”

Me being me, I caught up to him and asked, “Where are we going?”
