Blinking dusty lashes,it took me a moment to realize the person who’d spoken was the same man I’d seen before on the transport. His bright blue eyes unforgettable.

“You’re—”

He slapped a hand over my mouth and dragged me close, saying loudly, “It’s a good thing for the fire-prevention system. Got to be careful with those open-hearth fireplaces.”

I blinked at him as he aimed a device overhead that flashed.

“We can talk now,” he said. “But not for long, or the monitoring devices will sound an alert because they’re not working.”

“What are you doing here?”

“My job.”

I eyed his yellow outfit. “You’re supposed to be a Gray.”

“I’m whatever I need to be for the mission.”

“What mission?” Remembering what he’d done on the transport, I widened my eyes. “Are you going to kill me?”

“That depends on you. Thanks for not ratting me out to the commander. He doesn’t know what I look like, and I’d like to keep it that way.”

“I might have mentioned your blue eyes.”

He waved a hand. “Lots of people with that color. And easy enough to change with lenses.”

“Who are you?” I asked.

“A man with a purpose. To make the world a better place.”

“The commander says you’re a terrorist and dangerous.”

“Dangerous only to his power. His and the Cabal, who think they can rule us.”

“And you would change that?” I asked, even as I didn’t understand much about how things worked. Not anymore.

“I would abolish the colors and let people have the choice to live their own life. I’d get the Cavers out from below ground and back into the sun.”

It sounded like a good idea. I’d never known places existed outside the Caves. And the wonders I’d seen so far? “I think that would be wonderful.”

“I’m glad you agree, because I need your help.”

“My help?” He had a task for me?

“I need you to give the commander something for me.”

“Why can’t you give it to him?”

“Because I’m not able to get close to him. But you can.”

“I don’t know if I should.”

“You can trust me.”

“You’re a stranger.”

“My name is Silas. Now we’re not strangers.” He grinned.
