The commander—Sebastian—wasgone for two nights. When he returned, grim and exhausted, he nonetheless had a smile for me and held his arms open wide.

I flew into them. He wasn’t too tired to give me pleasure, and I tried something on him that I’d learned while he was gone, which had him shouting my name.

Everything was perfect until he told me over breakfast the next day, “We’ll be attending the Founders Gala tonight.”

The mention of the wordgalabrought a tremor to my hand as I spread jam on my toast. “That’s the yearly party celebrating those who first established New Banff.”

“Correct. As commander of the city, I’m expected to attend. I’d like you to come with me.”

Elation filled me because I knew not everyone in the white were so honored. “I would be delighted.” I tried not to think of the box. What did Silas have planned? The news I’d begun following didn’t shy from reporting on the terrorists and the harm they caused. Research showed their violence had no limits. While their supposed cause did have merit, I didn’t agree with their methods.

The commander interrupted my reverie. “I need to go to my office, but will return before it’s time to go. Given the importance of our appearance, I’ve taken the liberty of having certain items ordered for you.”

Apparently, the gala required preparation beyond my skills, which was why Serena arrived with a bevy of helpers and packages.

But first, I hugged her. She stiffened at first, then embraced me back.

“I am pleased to see you again,” I stated with sincerity. I’d come to realize how rare her honesty with me had been.

“You might not thank me once we start,” she said with a laugh.

I eyed the growing pile of jars and accoutrements on the counter. “Is all that necessary?”

“I brought more than we might need, given Sebastian didn’t give me much notice. I take it things are going well between you, since he’s bringing you as his escort?”

My cheeks turned red. “Yes.”

“Good. About time that man allowed himself a dose of happiness.”

Wait. She thought I made him happy? The idea pleased me more than it should have.

The preparation reminded me of the first time I was presented. Hair, nails, even my face, all got attention. However, my white gown was the most surprising of all. Formfitting, but with hardly any flesh showing. The only color was the red sash tied around my waist, and the ribbons woven in my hair.

His colors.

Sebastian arrived while we were still closeted in my room, meaning I had the pleasant surprise of seeing him when we emerged. He stood in the living room, tall and handsome in his fancy uniform. He sipped amber liquid from a glass, his expression grave until his gaze rested upon me.

I ducked my head as he drawled, “You look beautiful, Jasinda. You’ve outdone yourself, Serena.”

“She’s a lovely canvas to work with. You’ll make attractive children.”

His gaze dropped to my belly. “We are trying our hardest.”

I blushed, knowing whattryingmeant.

“Have fun tonight.” Serena shooed her helpers before leaving us alone.

Oddly, I found myself shy, even nervous.

He approached and lifted my chin. “Hold your head high. As my escort, there is no one above you.”

“Except for you.”

“Even me. Or haven’t you yet realized you bring me to my knees?” He dropped down and put his face against my stomach. I stroked his hair.

How things had changed. All for the better, which was why I had to do something before we left.
