“I’m glad. I want you to be happy with me, Jasinda.”

“I am. More than I could have ever imagined.” I tilted my face that he might see my smile as I replied.

“Truthfully?”

I nodded.

“Good. I don’t want there to ever be secrets between us. I deal with enough subterfuge at work and with those trying to take my place. I need to know I can trust you.”

“You can.” Not entirely a lie. I would never betray him. Not now.

“To think I found you by chance. The luckiest of chance.” His head dipped. Under the stars, we kissed.

“Commander!” An urgent shout brought Sebastian’s head around to scowl at the Enforcer in red who’d intruded upon our private moment.

“What?” he snapped, keeping me tucked by his side.

“You need to come at once. There’s been an incident at your home.”

My stomach clenched.

“What kind of incident?”

The Enforcer’s helmet hid his gaze, but I’d have sworn he looked at me. “You should see it, sir.”

“Let me see to Jasinda first.”

“You’ll want to bring her, as we believe this involves her.”

Oh, this wouldn’t be good.

“Involves her how?” was his cold query.

The soldier said nothing. He didn’t need to.

My discomfort must have been plain to see because Sebastian’s grip on me tightened. “Let’s go.”

The car ride had him sitting across from me in silence, brooding. A person with nothing to hide would have known what to do or say, but my guilt lay heavily upon me—and he knew it.

There was no gentle guide of his hand on my back as we arrived at his building and went down the steps to the door guarded by a pair of Enforcers. They saluted as we stepped past them into the apartment.

A person in green stood at the counter, jotting notes on a tablet. He glanced at us and quickly saluted. “Sir.”

“What’s going on?” Sebastian asked.

“A decontamination team had to be called in when the waste disposal unit in a bedroom indicated an anomaly. It’s been isolated and contained without incident.”

“What did you find?”

The man in green didn’t look at me, didn’t have to, as he said, “Appears someone tried to dispose of a biological weapon.”

My heart stilled. Weapon?

“Show me.”

“Of course, sir.” The man in green led us into my bedroom, and I could see more people dressed in the same hue in my bathroom, clustered around a hole in the wall. Beside them was a clear cube holding the box Silas had given me.

I hugged myself as the man in green offered the containment cube to Sebastian, who said nothing. The arctic cold in his eyes said everything.

Still, I expected him to at least talk to me. Ask me about the box I’d disposed of. Give me a chance to explain.

Instead, he pointed and barked, “Place her under arrest.”
