Silas shoved me ahead of him, forcing me onto metal stairs that had rusted through in spots, making me aware that what remained might not hold my weight. As if Silas cared.

“Move!” he barked. “Your commander will be here soon. The automated message about our rendezvous point will have arrived by now.”

“What makes you think he won’t descend with Enforcers?” I focused on talking to him rather than the fact a misplaced step might be fatal, given I wouldn’t be able to use my bound hands to save myself.

“Because I told him that if there’s any sign he’s not alone, you and his child die.”

I glared. “Your face should be included with the definition of depravity.”

“Do I need to gag you again?” he threatened as we reached the top floor with its open space, including the hole in the ceiling that let me see the open sky.

“Does hitting a woman who can’t defend herself make you feel like a stronger man?” I taunted.

“I’m thinking that removing your tongue might be a good idea,” Silas snapped.

“Harm her, and I will make you hurt before you die.”

The cold threat came from the commander, who was already present and waiting for us!
