Silas’s bodyhit the floor with barely a thud. I swallowed as I stepped back from Sebastian, who pushed himself to his feet.

“You need help,” I exclaimed, wringing my hands.

“Are you injured?” he asked instead of replying.

“Just some bruises and cuts. How can I help you?” I reached for him and then hesitated, snatching back my hand. What if I made it worse?

“Bah, it’s a hole. It will heal.” As if his words weren’t brash enough, he pulled the rod free, and blood gushed. Blood that was dark red, like his armor.

“Sebastian. Commander. I—” I had so many things I wanted to say. A jumble of emotions churned. I settled with, “I’m sorry.”

“I know.” He turned, cocking his head and saying, “They’re here.”

Theyturned out to be four Enforcers and a medic. Sebastian insisted she inspect me first. I slapped away the medic’s hands.

“I’m not the one who needs help. Fix him,” I begged, pointing to Sebastian, pale and yet determined to stand.

The medic, in a dark green uniform, eyed the commander. “I’ll need more than what’s in my bag to fix him. He requires a med unit, which is back in the city.”

“Then what are you waiting for?” I fluttered my hands uselessly, as if that would make her move faster.

“No.” Sebastian would have possibly said more if he hadn’t swayed on his feet and then collapsed.

I heard the wordsblood lossandemergencyas I cradled his head in my lap. Enforcers rushed in with a stretcher, and I watched as they carted him out, the Green leading the way.

Despite their urgency, I wasn’t left alone. The Enforcer who remained pulled off her helmet and revealed a face I knew.

“Serena?” I asked with surprise.

“Guess you didn’t expect to see me. I haven’t put on the armor since I married my Blue.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Sebastian needed extra help, so I volunteered. Looks like I’m the one who will be taking you back.”

“Back to the city,” I repeated softly. Where I’d likely end up in a cell again. I glanced at the sky overhead and appreciated the freedom it had come to represent.

“Things will work out,” she promised.

“You can’t say that for sure. You know how Sebastian feels about the law.”

“I do. But I also have seen how he feels about you. He was devasted when he thought you died. And then to discover you lived…”

“His concern is for the child I carry.” I placed a hand on my stomach.

“On that, you’re wrong. Sebastian cares for you.”

Tears pricked my eyes. “He locked me away.”

“Because he was angry. And he couldn’t hide what you’d done. He had no choice.”

“He still has no choice,” I reminded her.

“Don’t be so sure of that. What happened here today changes everything. Trust him.”

“Assuming he lives.”
