“The truth is complicated.”

“Try.”

I whirled to see him right behind me. Yet, I didn’t fear his presence. Rather, I yearned for him to be closer. “Since you insist, I fell in love with you.”

He brushed the backs of his fingers down my cheek. “How do I know you’re telling me the truth now?”

“You don’t.” I sighed. “And that’s my fault. For not realizing my secret would have such repercussions. I wish I could go back and change the things I did, but I can’t.”

“You’re not the only one with regret. I might have been too harsh when I had you arrested. But when I heard my brother’s name coming out of your mouth…” He scrubbed a hand through his hair. “I felt stupid. I mean, I knew he hated me and might be the one plotting, but then to think that you’d helped him? It rendered me irrational.”

I leaned up to cup his jaw, my turn to touch him for comfort. “I’m sorry.”

“No, I’m the one who needs to apologize for expecting you to know all the rules. I wanted you to trust me, and yet, I didn’t tell you everything. I had my own secrets.”

I laughed. “Are we going to keep apologizing?”

“Maybe.”

“Can that apology involve some food? I’m hungry.” Right on cue, my belly grumbled.

“Fuck, has no one fed you?” The man rushed to create a sandwich, which I devoured and kept down. The juice proved a balm to my parched throat. The strawberries for dessert burst with sweetness in my mouth.

But nothing compared to the whipped cream that he ate from my body. He licked every inch of me. His lips tugged and sucked my nipples. His tongue delved between my nether lips. He made me cry out his name. Dig my nails into his back. Welcome the thrusts of his body as he murmured, “I love you, I love you,” over and over, until he came, taking me over that orgasmic edge with him.

After, as he held me in his arms, skin to skin, he whispered, “Will you marry me?”
