"Good call," I say, grabbing my phone out of my jacket pocket. "I’m going to go. If I don’t, I’m definitely going to chicken out."

"Go," Bryony says, practically pushing me off the stage. I turn around to say something to them, but they’re talking among each other. I can hear them giggling.

Rei straightens up as he looks at me. My gaze flits toward the glass of lemon seltzer he’s drinking.

He smiles at me as he stands, brushing himself off as he does. Not that he needs to. His clothing is immaculate, his hair perfectly in place, and he looks like he just got ready to go out. I have no idea how he did this, but it’s more annoying than endearing. Much like I predicted, I’m gross; sweaty, and tired after a show, my hair probably wild and messy around my face. I brush it back with my fingers, which I don’t think helps much.

"You sounded good," he says as I approach him.

"Thanks, doc," I say. "You into punk?"

"Not yet," he replies, smiling at me. "But I’m easy. I can be talked into almost anything."

"You probably shouldn’t have told me that."

He purses his lips, his eyes narrowing. "Why? What are you going to try to talk me into?"

I shake my head. "I don’t know yet," I say. "But I’ll think something up."

"Good," he replies, looking right into my eyes. "I like a challenge."

We stand there, looking at each other for what feels like an interminably long second. He bites down on his lower lip, his jet-black eyes glimmering with the neon lights on the wall behind me. "So," he says. "You ready to get out of here?"
