"I think there might be a variety of explanations for your newfound awareness," I say.

"Do people pay you to say nothing to them?"

"No," I reply, smiling at her. "I told you, I don’t take patients. Was that your question?"

"No," she says, narrowing her eyes. She chews on her lower lip before she speaks again. "My question was—are you staying somewhere nearby?"

"Yes. Why?"

"That’s your question?"

"Yes. That’s my question."

"Because I’m still wondering if you’re going to invite me back with you," she says. "Or what your plan is."

"I don’t know if I have a plan yet," I say. "But I’m sure we can talk about it more when we get back to my room."

"Right," she says. "We’ll…talk."

I let my eyes skim over her body, giving her a half smile. "We’ll talk."

She smiles, her eyes shining, and I don’t want to ask her anything anymore.
