"Why hadn’t you told her yet?" Salinas asks, and I’m immediately grateful. That’s something, at least.

"Because it hadn’t come up, and because, believe it or not, I’m actually interested in her," Woods says, his gaze darting between us. "And it would’ve been better if you hadn’t ruined it for me."

"We’re going back to Boston in less than a week," I say.

"I’m aware of our schedule," Woods says. "But thanks for the information anyway."

"I wasn’t trying to ruin anything," I say, shaking my head. "I’m just worried she’s manipulating you. She might still be…you know."

"Possessed," Salinas says, taking a sip of his coffee. "It’s not a dirty word. Not that that’s ever stopped you before."

"I appreciate the concern," Woods says. He does not appreciate the concern. "But I would much prefer it if you let me handle my own business."

Salinas sighs. "Can we…can you guys talk about this later?" he asks. "We do still need to go see the person we’re here for."

"I think I’m going to eat in my room," Woods says, looking at Salinas. "Come get me when it’s time to leave."

When he walks away, Salinas tuts. "Wow," he says. "You really fucked up, huh?"

I groan. "Maybe I can talk to her about it."

"Yeah," he says softly. "Keep digging that hole. That’ll definitely help."

I want to argue with him, but I’m pretty sure he’s right. And I hate it. So we eat in silence, tension growing between us, until it’s time for us to leave.
