No matter how much I want to.

I’ve learned how important it is to give people space, and I’m taking all my cues from her. But fuck, I’m tempted, and I need to focus on something—anything—else. I want to go over to her, tell her I’m sorry, tell her that I will be as forthcoming with her as she wants me to be.

I want to rip her away from Misha, even though he’s barely touching her. He’s too close to her. He can smell her scent, and I’m jealous despite myself.

Luke obviously notices, clearing his throat so I turn to look at him. "He wouldn’t have," he says under his breath, and for the first time since Misha walked in with Trine, I consider that they might’ve slept together.

I take a sip of my water, trying my best to swallow down my fury. "Are you sure?" I ask.

Luke opens his mouth to say something, but Misha approaches us before he can. "Thanks for taking a taxi back to the hotel, guys," he says, addressing neither one of us. "She wants to talk to you."

I glare at him, but I say nothing. She’s still standing by the door, looking uncomfortable, her fingers twirling. "Did she say that?"

"Yes," Misha says. "She did."

"You better not be fucking with me," I say, glaring at him.

Instead of getting mad, Misha laughs. "I wouldn’t dream of it."

I walk away from him and toward her, aware that this is awkward, knowing that anything I could say might make it worse for her. "Hi," I say when I’m only a few feet away from her. Her brown eyes sparkle when I set my gaze on her.

"Hi," she says. "Misha really went to bat for you. Said you were a stand-up guy."

I furrow my brow.

"Is it a lie?"

"No, it’s true," I say. "I try to be. I’m just surprised he told you that."

"He said he was jealous."

"He did?" I ask. We’re still standing by the door, neither one of us making a move to sit down, and I’m aware that the guys are watching us, probably wondering what we’re talking about. I’m making an effort to keep my voice down, and Trine is matching my tone.

"He said he wanted to ask me out and you got there first."

I laugh, shaking my head. "He’s smart. Just slow," I say, then look her up and down. "Why are you telling me?"

I can see that she’s chewing on something, trying to decide whether to say it or not.

"It’s okay. You can always tell me what you want," I say. "Worse comes to worst, we can meet in the middle."

"What if the middle is you watching me fuck him?" she says, then clasps her hand over her mouth, her own words taking her by surprise.

I smile at her, my heart beating fast in my chest. She’s so fun. I really like her. "Then I’ll be annoyed you didn’t at least invite me to join," I say. "Because that is a possibility, right?"

Her eyes are glued on mine, and she doesn’t flinch, doesn’t move away, doesn’t do anything. Not for the longest time. Then she closes her eyes, her breath trembling. "Fuck," she says. "You guys are freaks."

"Yeah," I reply, smiling at her. "You have no idea."
