I turn to look at her. I don’t know why, but I wasn’t expecting Misha to bring her back here. “Not great,” I reply. “We called an ambulance. We should probably notify the mother.”
“There’s nothing else you can do?” Trine continues inching closer to Tom, until she’s sitting on the edge of the bed next to me.
It’s…concerning.
I want to tell her to stand up and get away from him, but I know that if I do that, and there’s any part of him that’s still holding on, he could be devastated.
I say nothing instead. Trine looks down at him, her eyes narrowing. “I feel so bad for him,” she says. She inches her hand closer to his arm and squeezes softly. “I don’t remember much, but what I remember is like, really fucking scary. He has to be afraid. What’s going to happen to him?”
“He’s probably going to be in a hospital for a little while,” I tell her. “After they figure out what he needs in order to be healthy, he’ll probably be put in a psych hold if he tries to tell them anything that’s happened here.”
“When will he be released?” she asks.
I shrug. “Hard to know. Did you report him?”
“No. Should I?”
“That’s up to you,” I reply. “If he was a criminal, they could probably keep him for longer.”
“But that wasn’t him. Tom would never do anything like that.”
I watch as Misha puts his hand on her shoulder. Luke is watching them, barely able to take his eyes off them, but I don’t want to look. Trine appears to be devastated. I can’t help but feel for her. This is probably the only person in the world she knows who’s been possessed, other than her.
“No,” Luke finally answers. “He wouldn’t. But he’s still in that body, and we need to find a way to keep him alive until we can help him.”
“How can you help him if he’s not here anymore?” Trine asks. Her voice sounds like she’s about to break.
“We’ll figure it out,” Luke says. It’s a platitude. We haven’t been able to figure it out so far. But that seems to be all Trine needs. She flashes him a tight smile, tilting her head as she does.
And then we hear sirens approach the house.
