This time I’m not shocked by his comment. “How old are you?” I smile even in this stressful situation. I have definitely never met anyone as refreshing as him.

I find a few ice cream tubs and decide on Ray’s favorite chocolate fudge. Zach’s eyes light up like a kid when I place a big scoop next to his pie.

He’s cute at times.I’ll have to give him that.

He does a double take after placing the first bite inside his mouth. “What the hell is this? It tastes amazing but…very different.”

I take a sip of my coffee after passing the second plate to William. “It’s sweet potato,” I say, hiding my smile behind the cup.

“The vegetable?” Zach looks carefully at his fork before placing another bite in his mouth.

I nod, enjoying his surprised expression.

“You definitely need to make this, Will. It’s fucking delicious,” he mutters. His attention is back on the plate as he wolfs down the pie.

“I have a young boy who hates vegetables, so I’m forced to find creative ways to get some nutrition into him,” I explain.

Zach has already polished off his plate when William asks me if he can take his coffee and dessert outside for fresh air.

I nod, though I find it weird given it’s almost the middle of the night.

I don’t comment immediately but my curiosity wins soon. I check the timer on the oven before turning to Zach who has opened his laptop again. “Why is William outside? It’s so dark and cold.”

He looks up at me before glancing at the door. “Oh, don’t worry about Will. He usually doesn’t dine with me as I am the master of the household.”

The coffee in my mouth splutters out. “Please tell me you didn’t just saymaster of the household?” I ask, cleaning my face and hands with the paper towel.

“Of course.” Zach shrugs and gives me a lopsided grin.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve wondered what this man is doing here.

Every time I look at him, I notice something attractive about him. His wavy dark hair, gray eyes, slightly pointed ears. Everything about him appears mystical. I cantotallysee him on some period drama playing the role of an elfin king.

My furniture is not designed for his tall frame and his long legs stretch out from under the small table. Even his socks scream class with the letter“Z”inscribed over the elastic band. The cufflinks on the cuffs of his light blue shirt also have the same inscription. His navy-blue jacket fits him like it was tailor made for him.

He issonot someone who spends his nights in other people’s kitchens eating pie and ice cream.

“Checking me out?”

My head jerks up and I find him staring at me with that pompous, seductive smile.

I pinch my lips together as my pulse skyrockets at his words and that smile. Of course, he would think I’m checking him out. I’m sure women fall over him wherever he goes.

“I wasn’t checking you out. I was wondering why there is this guy sippingmycoffee inmyhouse but I know nothing of him.”

As much as I am thankful to Zach tonight, I don’t admire his cocky attitude at this moment.

“Hey, I’m sorry.” His sincere gaze doesn’t leave my face. “I’m not known for being…”

“Respectful?” I fill in for him, but immediately regret it as his face falls.

I usually have such a hard time saying what I want. The perfect reply, the perfect answer, would always come to me the next day, but with Zach I don’t seem to have this issue.

“I’m sorry, that was uncalled for.”

At the same time, the oven timer dings, breaking our awkward moment. I put on the mitts and place the cakes on the cooling rack.

“Don’t apologize. I shouldn’t have said that,” Zach says when I finally turn off the oven.
