“These roads are windy and dark, and we still haven’t heard from the wolves who went over the edge. You don’t want to find out what they’re up to the hard way,” Logan said.

“Fine.”

Logan held the door open for Bibi and me, and then climbed into the driver’s seat. I loved the way he took control of the situation so easily. Immediately brought order to the endless chaos. If this had been Pedro, I might not have had a home to go back to.

I had to stop comparing Logan to my ex. It wasn’t even fair.

“Well, I had a feeling tonight would change everything, but it was because we planned to publish some of the footage from our interview that we never got to finish. We’ll have to look at the schedule and squeeze in new interviews as soon as possible,” Bibi said.

I laughed. “I love that you’re all about The Mating Game, even when you’re a wolf.”

“The viewers will eat this up, especially when they realize that you’re spending the night together. Depending on what we find when we get to your house, would you be opposed to filming?”

“That’s up to Cindy. We have to make sure the kids are okay.”

“Film it.”I didn’t expect the words to come out of my mouth. “We’re not doing anyone any favors if we make it look perfect.”

“But I want this to be perfect for you,”Bibi said. “I know, wolves are gonna wolf. But I’m trying to show everyone that there’s a better way than the endless fighting. We have choices.”

“That makes it even more important to film tonight.” Logan’s voice still had a rumble to it. “It won’t have the impact if they don’t see how far Cindy’s come.”

We’d arrived in the village, and seeing it through wolf eyes was different tonight. When Bibi suggested moving away from Green Mountain, it seemed too good to be true. Like it wouldn’t matter how far I ran, I’d never be able to escape my pack. But now, there was no way in hell I was leaving. Because wolves like Sarah—wolves like my daughter—needed to see that they could stand up to the status quo and beat it.

All the lights were on in my house. Not a good sign. What if they’d been attacked? The only thing that had gotten me through the fight was the confidence that my pack wouldn’t screw with my kids. They could fight me, but going for my kids crossed a line. Especially if they said they were doing Pedro’s dirty work.

He hadn’t exactly been a shining example of a family man, but I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’d kill anyone who laid a finger on his children.

Sarah sat on the front step of the porch, with Charlotte beside her. She was wrapped in her blankie and playing with a stuffie. The boys were bouncing around like little maniacs.

And Bjorn was pulling on his T-shirt to film this chaos.

“Mommy’s a wolf!” Caleb bounced around me. “Why are you a wolf?”

“We thought the bad wolves got you,” Carter added. Bad wolves? He sized up Logan, balling his little hands on his hips. “You’re not allowed here. This is our territory, buster.”

“He belongs here.”The boys jumped back—they weren’t used to hearing me growl. “Don’t you dare pee on him.”

“They already got me.” Sarah sighed as she stood. “I changed into your clothes because I couldn’t sit here smelling like someone else’s pee. What happened? I thought you were going to film something for the show.”

“I wanted to surprise Logan. Mission accomplished, I guess. Surprise.”

“Surprise!” Caleb was wired.

Sarah had probably bribed them with copious amounts of sugar to get them to stop being gross. Moon knows I’d done the same thing many times when I was in her shoes.

“We need to get everyone back in bed. And I have to shift.”

“I can help you,” Logan said, but he turned to Sarah. “While Cindy shifts, we need to have a talk.”

“About what?” Sarah backed up a couple of steps. He might have been human, but his wolf still intimidated.

“Was it a big surprise that we came back wolf?”I asked.

She furrowed her brow. “I don’t understand what you’re talking about. It’s been a long night, I need a shower, and I honestly don’t care what you did as long as you came back safe.”

“Your dad and his buddies intercepted me on the way to Sunset Springs,”I said.

Her mouth dropped. “No. Shit. What happened?”

I recounted the fight for her. Her frustration rose, and I was fairly sure the only role she’d played in the attack was telling him that I’d hired her. “He got pushed off the ledge, near the wash. We didn’t see him again after that.”

Her hand flew up to her mouth as a strangled cry escaped from her lips. Sarah and Joe had always been close. I didn’t want him to be hurt, either. But we had to send a message that my life was not his business.

“Is he okay?” she asked.

“I hope so.”

“I have to get home.” She was already halfway out of the yard. “I’m not responsible for this. I was doing you a favor, Cindy. And this”—she motioned to The Mating Game crew— “could destroy the pack.”
