“This is it, Kit.” I plopped down on my bed and sighed.
I was fully moved into my new duplex, and no one knew where I was. I hadn’t even notified my job of my new address.
I was hoping I could wait until this whole Malcom thing blew over, and then I could let them know.
I was now a resident of Falls City.
After hours of scouring every want ad online, I had found a furnished half of a duplex in Falls City for rent that I could move into immediately.
It had been a miracle.
I had only stayed in my house for one night before I packed up everything I could and stayed in a hotel for two nights.
Now I was here.
I knew absolutely no one here, and I felt relatively safe.
I had met the landlord for all of two minutes before he had me fill out some information, and then he handed me the keys. He was a tall, handsome man with tanned skin and was wearing a dark suit.
He didn’t ask many questions about me, and I repaid the favor by not asking all the ones I had about him.
Finding this duplex had been the answer to all my prayers, and I didn’t want to ruin it by asking Marco, my landlord, a dumb question.
He said he lived in Rockton and that the property was managed by one of his employees. Marco had to have a lot of money because the duplex was nicer than any other place I had ever lived, and it was twice the size of my old place.
It was six or seven days since Zag, and I had almost died, and now I was living in a new house. It almost felt like nothing had ever happened.
Almost.
The one thing I kept thinking about was Zag.
In the short days that we had been together, I had grown an attachment to him. He had been the reason why I was still alive.
Zag had been the one to drag me to the other side of the wall. If he hadn’t done that, neither one of us would be alive.
Kit jumped on the bed and curled up in my lap. “You like your new home?” I cooed to Kit.
He purred loudly and pressed his face into my palm.
I looked around the large bedroom and sighed.
I was safe, but for how long?
