Emery gasps and drops to her knees beside her daughter at once. “Honey, you… you just handed that to me.”

Isabella looks at the cup in her mother’s trembling hand. She frowns for a moment. Then, like the sun parting storm clouds, her face splits in a wide grin. “Hey! I did it! My hands worked, Mama!”

Isabella is lifting one arm and then the other, testing out her new but still limited talent.

Emery turns to me, tears in her eyes. “The meds are working, Adrik. It’s… it’s…”

I turn to Isabella. “I think this calls for a celebration.”

Her eyes widen. “How?”

“Cake and candy for everybody. Fuck the fruit.”

The little girl gasps in shock. I smirk. And for once, Emery doesn’t complain.

Things are too good for that.
