I clamp my lips closed and look into Adrik’s blue eyes. Slowly, he leans towards me. I know he’s going to kiss me, but that still doesn’t allow me to prepare my body for the rush of dopamine that floods my system as soon as our lips touch.
Instantly, the tension I’ve been holding melts away. I sigh into his mouth, and for a moment, all the constant chatter in my head lulls to silence.
When he pulls away, I blink back to reality.
“This is your plan. You’re going to carry it out,” he says.
“And you’ll be there with me?”
“Whether you want me to be or not,” he says. “Always.”
At one time that would have felt like a threat. I would have felt suffocated. But that’s only because I didn’t know Adrik back then. I didn’t understand what it meant to be cared for by someone as strong as him. Having him with me to catch me when I stumble and embrace me when I succeed…
It’s better than anything I could have imagined.
I take a deep breath and nod. “Okay.”
“Okay,” Adrik echoes. “Let’s go.”
