“Of course.”

I can tell she’s searching me, looking to make sure I’m telling the truth. Then, with a wobbly chin, she nods. “Okay.”

“Thanks for all your help.” I smooth her dark hair back and then press a kiss to the top of her head. “I’ll be back.”

I nod at Toma as I pass, a silent thank you, and head towards the elevator.

Just as the doors open, Isabella calls out. “Adrik?”

“Yeah?”

She pouts. I see glimmers of Emery in her fire. “When you see Sofia, tell her I don’t think she’s nice anymore.”

I go perfectly still. The elevator doors open and close behind me, but I hardly notice. The pulse of blood is thundering in my ears. “What did you say?”

Toma is staring down at Isabella with an intensity I’ve never seen from him before.

“Tell Sofia I don’t think she’s nice anymore,” Isabella repeats. “She hurt Mama, and I don’t like her.”

“The woman’s name was Sofia?”

This should be impossible. I should be shocked. But strangely, I’m not.

Isabella nods.

“Sofia had dark hair?”

Isabella nods. “And a big boo-boo on her face.”

I found Sofia right after the accident. I pulled her out of her car. I saw the burns on her face up close. Yet when Emery mentioned the woman’s scars to me, it never crossed my mind.

Because I thought Sofia was dead.

But like all mistakes, she has come back to haunt me.

This time, however, I know exactly what she’s up to. And I know exactly where to find her.
