He hesitates. Obviously, he isn’t as confident in his plan as he seems. He isn’t sure whether I’m setting him up or not. “Maybe it should wait until things cool down. You’re going through a lot and there’s so much to sort out.”

“A drink,” I say. “At your house. Like old times.”

“I don’t know, Adrik.”

“I made a promise,” I remind him. “I told Veronika you would live if you helped me. And you did. Or you tried. My word is good.”

It’s true—my word is good. Yasha would survive the day if he’d actually tried to help Emery.

But his word is fucking worthless. He has left me no choice.

“Okay,” he relents. “Okay. We can meet. Tell me when.”

I smile, but keep my voice solemn. “Right now.”
