Dash saw honey, vinegar, a lemon, and olive oil. “Are we making dinner or changing my hair color?”

“This is a natural recipe. Much better for your hair than an ammonia compound. It won’t bleach your hair or dye it, but it will change the color. We need to put it on and leave it on for about half an hour or more before you wash your hair. The girls in the palace used to do it to add highlights to their hair. I didn’t want to buy anything that would make people suspicious. This should lighten it so it’s closer to brown than black, and there’ll be bits of red or even blond in places where we apply the mixture more heavily.”

Dash looked at the notice again. “I was thinking. Based on the details given here, two of the items I have left belong to people who don’t live that far from here. What if we split up? I can take everything and leave it outside the magistrate’s house or perhaps at the temple or something. With a note, like I did before.”

Christopher chewed his lip. “I don’t want us separated while people in the area are on the lookout for you.”

“I don’t want to be separated from you at all, but I don’t want us to be caught with stolen items in our possession. It could cause problems for you and Renn.”

“And you.”

“Yes, but I’ve lived with that risk for years by my own choice.”

Christopher brought a bowl from the sink and began adding ingredients to the mixture. “If you get caught, you have to promise to send word to me.”

“I’ll be careful, but yes, I promise.”

“What if you left the items here as we were leaving? There’s a constable station across from the tavern.”

“Someone might notice us. Better for me to leave something in passing. We’ve taken a room here and been seen in the tavern. It’s too dangerous, especially since you’ll be even more in the public eye soon.”

“Will you promise me one more thing?”

“Of course,” Dash said, turning to him.

Christopher slid his arms around Dash’s waist. “Come back to me as quickly as you can.”

Dash chuckled. “I hunted you down before. You know I’ll get back as quickly as I can.”

“You better,” Christopher said, pulling him into a hungry kiss.

Dash returned the need-filled embrace, their project to alter his appearance forgotten for the next couple of hours.
