“And we have to set some ground rules.”

I rolled my eyes and laughed. “What is up with you and rules?”

Her pouty pink lips pinched together. “I like rules. Rules keep things clean and clear.”

“But rules aren’t any fun.” I frowned.

She lifted an eyebrow. “We need some ground rules.”

“Okay, fine. Like what?”

After a pause, she lifted her finger. “Like, rule number one: no funny business. No flirting and kissy stuff.”

I furrowed my brow. “Like I said, rules aren’t any fun.”

“Ethan, I’m serious!” She laughed. “No sexy stuff. Even though I may have given you that impression last night, that’s not what I’m about. Okay? Just two people sharing a ride. Aplatonicride.”

“Okay, fine, fine,” I reluctantly agreed. “No sexy stuff. What else?”

“Rule number two: I pay for gas. I feel bad you’re doing this for me, so at least let me pick up the gas bill.”

“You don’t have to do that. I’m happy to pay for gas.”

She shook her head. “No. Please let me do at least this. You’re really doing a solid for me.”

“Okay, fine. You pay for gas, butrule number three ...”

“Wait. Now you’re making rules?”

I grinned. “Yep. Rule number three is that the driver picks the music.”

“Oh, God. You like weird death metal or something, don’t you? I can’t agree to this until I know your music taste since you’ll be driving.”

I shook my head. “Nope. Non-negotiable. Do you agree?”

She grumbled. “Fine. I agree.”

“Any other rules?”

She tipped her head. “Um, not that I can think of. Wait! I guess let’s make rule number four: No murdering me. I think that’s a good one.”

A hearty laugh shook my shoulders. “I think it’s funny that’s not rule number one, but okay. Agreed. I promise not to murder you. Is that it then? Got the rules covered? We going on a road trip?”

Ivy took a deep breath and sighed, then stuck out her hand. “We’re going on a road trip.”

I grasped her hand, and I couldn’t help but imagine the tiny sparks traveling along our skin when we touched. At least it felt that way to me.

No kissy stuff,I reminded myself but felt grateful I’d crossed my fingers when I’d agreed to rule number one.

“Let’s do this, partner.”
