I turned toward him, lifting a brow. “Jump into a giant pile of leaves is on my new list. You in?”

His eyebrows shot to his hairline. “Right now? You’re in a cocktail dress.”

“So?” I smiled.

He grinned widely. “Race you!”

He dropped my hand and took off running. I squealed and kicked off my shoes, then bolted after him. He slowed down enough I could catch up, then he grabbed my hand, and we launched into the pile together. An explosion of colors surrounded me just before I slammed my eyes shut as we disappeared into the pile.

The leaves crunched under me as I struggled to roll onto my back. I felt Ethan stirring beside me, and his head popped up into my line of sight with a huge grin right before he rolled on top of me.

“That was awesome!” I shouted before he closed my mouth with a kiss.

I wrapped my arms around him and let myself get lost in the moment. When we’d run out of breath, he finally broke apart our kiss.

“If there was even the slightest chance we could get away with this without getting seen, I would definitely find a way to have sex with you in here.”

I tipped my head. “That sounds tricky.”

“Add it to the list. Have sex in a leaf pile. We’ll figure it out.”

I laughed and kissed his nose. “Done. It’s on the list.”

“Good. I love getting to be part of your list.”

“Me too,” I admitted, then the reality of our situation settled back into me. In a few days, Ethan would no longer be in my life or at my side as I knocked away all the to-dos on my list.

Don’t lose yourself,I reminded myself as Jenna’s warning reverberated inside my head.

Just enjoy him for now, in the moment.

I kissed him again, memorizing his taste and his smell as we sunk deeper into the leaves.

“Okay, now I’m ready for eight,” I whispered into his ear, then gently took it between my teeth.

“Oh, damn, girl. That’s not fair. We still have a drive back to the hotel.”

“Then drive fast.”

He grinned down at me, then stood up, snagging me around the waist and tossing me over his shoulder. I laughed until my stomach hurt as he ran with me across the manicured lawn, then tossed me into the car.

Parting with him would be painful, no getting around that, but being with him was anything but. And it was worth the impending agony to enjoy these few days with a man who set my world on fire.
