“W-what?” Avery sputtered, switching her weight from foot to foot with nervous energy. “One room?”

Sebastian turned a chagrined expression on her. “I’m so sorry. That’s all I have left.”

“Maybe we should try another hotel,” she suggested.

“Everything is booked,” Sebastian answered. “There’s a huge wedding here tomorrow with over five hundred guests. Between them and the other guests here for vacation, all the hotels and even smaller places like B&Bs are full.”

Holding back a smile, I put my hands out in defeat. “I guess we’ll take it.”

“But—but—um…” Avery looked at me from the corner of her eye, then back to Sebastian. “You’re sure? Nothing?”

He pretended to look again, then shook his head. “Do you want me to cancel it and find you a flight home tonight?”

My head whipped up and I glared at my former friend. I was going to kill him. That had not been part of the plan.

Avery shuffled her feet and glanced at me again. “We can’t cancel. I guess we have no choice if we are going to make our other meetings.”

“Wonderful,” Sebastian schmoozed with a smile that won over his guests time and time again. He hit a button and a little machine spit out two card keys, which he slipped into an envelope and handed to Avery. “I’ll send your bags up. Also, dinner is on me and I apologize again for the mix-up.”

“Thanks,” I replied, then returned my hand to Avery’s back and steered her toward the elevator.
