Lily studied me curiously. “Okay. Well, what is it you are looking for?”

“I understand you hired my new assistant today?”

“Oh, well, yes. Did you want to approve the choice?” Her cheeks turned a little pink and I realized she thought I was questioning her choice.

“No, No. Well, yes. But I trust your judgment in hiring, Lily. This is an…unusual circumstance.”

She tilted her head and tapped her lip with her index finger. “It must be for you to come to my office rather than calling or asking me to come to yours.”

“It is. I know this is going to sound unorthodox”—she raised her eyebrows and smirked—“but I want you to make a switch. The woman you hired to be Gordon’s assistant, I want you to swap her for mine.”

Lily stared at me as if I’d grown two heads. “You want me to swap…”

“Swap his for mine,” I repeated.

“You do know we are talking about people and not new toys, right, Gabe?”

I chuckled as I slowly extricated myself from the tiny chair and stood. “I’m very well aware that she is a woman. Her start date is Monday?”

Lily tapped a few keys on her keyboard then nodded. “Avery—you’re new assistant, I guess—and Brielle—now working for Gordon—start orientation on Monday.”

“Don’t worry about orientation for Avery,” I told her nonchalantly as I headed for the door. “I’ll take care of it.” I didn’t wait for her to answer because I would not budge. I’d teach Avery everything she needed to know.
