Avery was watching me hesitantly, so I smiled and beckoned her closer with my hand. “Why didn’t you mention you knew my business partner?” I had a feeling I knew the answer.

“I didn’t want you to think I got this job because of him.”

“That’s what I figured.” I leaned back in my chair and scratched my chin. “You’ve been here less than a day and I already know you’re the perfect choice for the position.”

I meant what I said, and not just because I wanted her with me. She’d impressed me, and I had a feeling that we were going to make a great team at work, as well as outside of it.

“Thank you,” she breathed, her light green eyes glowing happily from the praise.

I dragged my eyes away from her beautiful face so I could focus on work. A glance at my computer reminded me I had a client pitch coming up in two weeks. In Canada.

“Rhys called about a new account, and I’d like to get started on it right away,” I told her. “But there’s one more duty as my assistant that I forgot to discuss with you. Do you have your passport?”

“I…well, yes,” Avery answered, looking confused.

“Sometimes, I need to travel to meet with a client or pitch to a prospective one. I’ll need you to assist me on those trips. I wanted to know if I needed to work on getting you an expedited passport.”

“Travel?” She sounded a little breathless and it was sexy as hell. “With you? Alone?”

In order to keep her from seeing the hunger I had no doubt was visible in my eyes, I turned my gaze back to my computer. “Is that a problem?” I mentally patted myself on the back for keeping my tone light.

Avery remained quiet for so long that I started making a frantic backup plan in case she said yes. To my relief, she eventually cleared her throat and murmured, “No.”

I almost laughed when she softly added, “I’m a professional.” I wasn’t sure if she was trying to convince herself or me.
