“What’s happening?” I snapped, and Eoghan grunted.

“They must have knocked him out finally. He has a high tolerance to meds.”

I hadn’t known that. Why would I? But there were so many things I didn’t fucking know, and it killed me.

I wanted to know it all, and I had no right to it. But, also, he wouldn’t want me to know.

He could look at me without hatred overtaking everything else only when he was drugged to the hilt… That said a lot about the state of our relationship.

I sucked in a sharp breath as a movement caught my eye. Watching the doctors slice into him had me wincing, and I let Eoghan drag me away.

I didn’t see much along the path to wherever he was taking me, and that was because of just how dark it was in here. The only light came from behind me, in the makeshift operating room, and then a door that glowed with illumination.

When I made it in there, I saw Amaryllis sobbing, sandwiched between her two guys, who both looked wrecked from the night’s events.

They were seated on simple plastic chairs that lined the walls, where Inessa and Conor were also sitting. Conor was on the phone, and Inessa was digging her hands into the edge of the seat like she was holding herself back.

The second she saw Eoghan, she was off and practically throwing herself at him. The love in her face was painful to behold, and it reminded me far too much of how I’d looked whenever Declan had graced me with his attention.

I just hoped to fuck Eoghan would never hurt her like Declan had hurt me.

When Eoghan caught her and hugged her tight, no shame in his face at the PDA, no horror at her emotional response to his presence, I figured her heart was safe in his keeping.

No Five Pointer would let a bitch do that if she was only a snatch to him.

Emotions and clinging were the death knell for every relationship with one of them.

Unless they felt the same way, of course. Then it was completely different.

Pain filtered through me, jealousy and happiness for her too, as I mimicked her earlier position—sitting on the edge of the uncomfortable plastic seat, my hands curved around the edge.

Brennan stunned the hell out of me by appearing out of nowhere and bobbing down at my side. When his fingers traced the tattoo on my wrist, I flinched.

With his other hand, he reached for my chin, and though I tried to bow my head, he wouldn’t let me.

“He claimed you.”

The words had tension filling me. “He didn’t do a good job of it, did he?” I rasped.

“He wouldn’t have given you the mark if he intended on—”

“On what?” I snapped, and I dragged my arm back, curving it around my waist.

“She had a kid with him, Brennan,” Eoghan murmured, making me close my eyes as my entire world collapsed around me.

“A kid?” Conor pretty much squeaked, before he stated, “Nothing, Ma. No! There’s no need for you to come down—” He rubbed a hand over his face. “Shit. She’s coming down.”

“Christ. That means Da is on his way.” Brennan blew out a breath. “I’ll go outside and wait for them. Head them off.” But he didn’t move. Not yet. Instead, he stared at me. “He won’t forgive you.”

“I know he won’t,” I snarled at him. “I’m well aware of that, Brennan. I don’t need your warning.”

He shook his head. “What the fuck went wrong with you two?”

“Too long a story to even explain it, and it’s old news.”

“No, it isn’t. He’s always been hooked on you—”

“He was hooked on Deirdre.”
