"Worse than usual." I blew out a breath. "Then, I got the job offer with TVGM, and even though Wintersen eyed me up like I was his version of jelly beans, he never, ever touched me. I know that’s because Aidan got me the job. Earlier on, Conor told me that Wintersen has gone missing."

"Missing as in... he thinks Aidan had him killed?"

My tone turned hushed. "That was the inference."

"But Wintersen didn’t come onto you," Jen reasoned. "You came onto him. He never did anything against you like he did the other women, your friends, right?"

"Yeah, he left me alone."

She grunted. "Okay, so you reconnected recently—"

"Last night."

"You had sex, and what? You’re questioning the universe? You really need to stop that, honey. Just accept the orgasm and get on with your life."

"We’re going to be stuck together throughout these exposés."

She paused. "The O’Donnellys are protecting you?"

I knew she wasn’t aware of the repercussions of my exposés. Though she’d been raised in Hell’s Kitchen, and like any smart kid from that neighborhood, knew to leave the O’Donnellys well alone, she was just an average citizen.

Learning that her other friend was Finn O’Grady’s wife came as much of a shock to me as it did to Aidan. That Jen kept some things to herself was a given. I did the same, but that still surprised me. It also told me that Finn’s wife kept her in the dark about her husband’s business practices. Natural, but still, something to learn.

We all had our secrets.

Me included.

"They are."

"Why? Are you in danger?"

"Maybe. It’s just a precaution."

"Jesus, should you come tonight?"

"It’s in my building. I think it’ll be fine." I doubted Aidan would let me go if something changed between now and then.

"Are you sure?"

No. But... "I’m not going to miss out on meeting your mystery schmuck. Plus, if you spill margaritas in his lap, I want a front row seat."

"You’re so supportive."

I huffed out a laugh. "And you are? My feelings for Aidan are not induced from the contraceptive pill."

"Well, that’d make far more sense than instant love," she retorted, making me roll my eyes.

"If you say so. I’ll see you later, Jen. I gotta get going."

"Yeah, my lunch break’s over. Speak later, babe. And Savannah?"

"What?"

"If he makes you feel good, and not just with orgasms, then what’s the harm in seeing how things unfold, huh?

"It’s in your nature to overthink everything. It goes with the job, I guess. But you shouldn’t. Sometimes, you just have to embrace what’s happening and throw caution to the wind. Where’s the fun in life if you’re always second guessing everything?"

And as she put the phone down, I was reminded of my valedictorian speech. Her words and mine were similar enough that even though we were polar opposites, I was prodded into remembering why we were close friends. How something disingenuous had morphed into an all-out friendship.
