He tipped his chin to the side in assent.

My brow puckered. "I don’t understand. I’m not looking at current events. I’m not even investigating things that will take your family down. Why would that be—" Despite myself, I swallowed, nerves fluttering in my stomach like a hive of bees had overtaken it.

It wasn’t the first time I’d put myself in danger for a story. As a journalist, a good one at that, I pissed off a lot of people. But there was a difference between being threatened, between getting mugged and having my bag with my research stolen, and having a hit put out on me by the head of the Irish Mob.

Jesus.

Aidan Jr. just blinked at me. "I think we should start back at the beginning."

"What? Why? Just answer me!" I barked.

"See? Only a stupid person would maintain that act when there’s a death threat on the line. I’m relieved to see that you’re not an idiot."

I frowned. "Is this a joke?"

"I rarely joke about business." His nostrils flared and a glimmer of irritation sparked into being in his beautiful green eyes. Yeah, did I mention this guy was hot? "My name’s Aidan O’Donnelly."

"I know who you are," I muttered impatiently. "Just as you know I’m Savannah Daniels."

He hummed. "Funny how you’re the only one of your father’s kids to go into an actual line of work rather than just riding on his coattails."

"Not sure you can judge anyone on that considering you’re going to sit on the Five Points’ throne one day." I arched a brow at him. "Nepotism at its best, no?"

He smirked a little. "Nepotism or maybe I’m just the right person for the job?"

"Is there ever a right person for that kind of job?" I leaned forward, but before I could say another word, Suzy popped up with my chai latte and a set of silverware wrapped up in a napkin.

"Five minutes, Savannah. That okay with you?"

After clearing my throat, I broke my heated stare with Aidan and shot her a look. "That’ll be great, Suzy. Thank you."

She smiled at me, then to Aidan, asked, "You sure you don’t want anything to eat?"

He shook his head. "I’ll have one of those chai lattes and some water, please."

Of course, when he smiled at her, she blushed.

I wasn’t sure if I could blame her or not.

Suzy was barely nineteen and had the palest skin. Even her freckles stood out in stark relief on her cheeks. They were pretty much the skin-version of exclamation points.

At nineteen, I was sure that I’d have just melted into the ground if an older guy like Aidan even deigned to look at me, never mind order from me with a politeness that I didn’t think he’d be capable of.

Let’s face it.

He was the heir to a criminal empire.

Did he have to smile at nervous waitresses?

Or did that just mean he wasn’t an asshole?

Gnawing on the inside of my cheek as Suzy stuttered out her understanding, I reverted my attention to him and stared straight at him, so that he’d feel my glance.

When she headed off to get his order, he turned back to me and I murmured, "Didn’t think chai latte would be your thing."

"I’m a big fan of cardamom."

A laugh escaped me. "Seriously?"
