“And I’m telling you that you don’t need you.”

“Fine.” Again, she sounded like she was at the end of her patience.

“Ok, you’ll have time to settle in later. Let me show you the baby’s room.”

Sofi was located across the hall from the guest suite. I picked that place because it was empty and it had big windows. I haven’t set foot inside in five days. After I came back from Elena’s funeral in California and the crib was installed, Sofi was officially my staff’s concern. At least now she had her own person.

When I opened the door, there was no sound coming from inside, but I ignored the urge to look and check on Sofi.

“This is it?” Amelia asked.

“Yes. I hope you’ve got it from here because I need to get to my office. I’ve lost enough time already.”

“Umm, ok. Does Sofi have a routine?”

“She’s eleven months. She sleeps and she eats.”

“That’s not all kids do, sir.” She crossed her arms to accentuate the anger in her voice, but all I saw were her breasts pushed higher.

“I’m not good with kids.”

“I can tell. Does she have any dietary restrictions?”

“Not that I know of.”

“Not that you know of? With all due respect, Mr. Knox, you should know. Food allergies are not a joke.”

“I…” she had a fucking point, but how was I supposed to know? I wasn’t Sofi’s father. I was the uncle who only had time to see her once after she was born because work ate too much of my time.

“Do you have her medical records?”

“Emily sent all of that to a pediatrician. I can have her forward you his contact information.”

“Please do. Also, you may want to talk in a lower voice when she’s asleep, so you won’t wake her up.”

I wasn’t planning to be around her, awake or asleep.

“I didn’t know she was sleeping.” And I did not appreciate the way she was passive-aggressively snapping at me. Someone with her attitude belonged in bondage.

“Babies make sounds all the time, sir. When they don’t, they are asleep. Otherwise, you should worry.”

“Right. The tour is over, Miss Hart. As of now, Sofi is your problem.”

Amelia’s blonde head turned to me in a sharp movement and her eyes narrowed, throwing flames.

“Sofi is not aproblem.” She took a deep breath. “She is yourniece.”

I fucking knew that. Until I found someone else to take her, I was all she had in the world and that made me think Sofi was a very unlucky baby. Amelia could give me her judgement all day long, she had no idea. I was doing this kid a favor by staying the hell away and making sure she would end up in a normal family.

“Right again, Miss Hart.” With that, I turned and walked away. I was done with this and I was done with Amelia Hart for the day. I had to put some space between us because my need to pin her to the wall was becoming overwhelming. And that would havedefinitelywoken the baby up.
