Page 2 of Nanny

“Hey, I work behind the bar, so I wear whatever I want. I wasn’t talking about that. Today, before we opened the doors, Knox came in to talk with Sheila, our manager. I think she needed him to approve the remodeling they want to do next spring. Anyway, while he was up in the office, I served his PA with coffee and we talked. Apparently, Knox is in need of a person to work in his private staff. Someone with childcare experience.” Poppy clapped her hands. “I told Emily, the assistant, about you and she agreed to grant you an interview. All you have to do is call her.”

“Call her?” I’ve never heard the name Hunter Knox and children in the same sentence. Was he a father?

“Yeah, I have her number in my purse.”

“Wait, childcare? You mean like a nanny?”

“Exactly like a nanny.”

“Knox has kids?” Was he looking for a nanny for a mistress or something? He was the hottest bachelor on market. I was sure of it. He was on some kind of list on Buzzfeed a couple of months ago.

“No, but he has a niece.”

“A niece?” Maybe it was because I hadn’t had any normal conversations in a week, but it was very hard for me to process what Poppy was saying.

“Yes, Amy. His sister’s child. He became her legal guardian last week. You haven’t watched the news at all?”

“I was too busy wallowing in my self-pity to turn on the TV.”

“Hunter’s sister was murdered by her boyfriend. He stabbed her in their apartment because they had an argument about his gambling problem. It’s been on every channel.”

My eyes grew wide like dinner plates.

“Wow.”

“Yeah, it was gruesome. Knox was out of the state until yesterday to take care of the funeral. The fucker who killed his sister is still at large and the police are trying to find him.” Maybe I should have watched the news. “Anyway, he needs a nanny for the baby and after I told Emily about you, I think you have a shot.”

“I…baby?” This was crazy. I wasn’t a nanny. “Babe, I don’t know anything about babies and I don’t have childcare experience.”

“You worked as a teacher.”

“That’s education, it’s different. My job was to teach them, not to keep them alive.”

“Oh, come on, you have to go to this interview. It’s not like you’re gonna take care of a newborn; she’s almost one.”

“One is almost the same as a newborn. Poppy, thank you, but I think Hunter Knox is going to hire someone with experience who knows CPR and what to do if the baby chokes on something. Maybe someone German. I’ve heard German nannies are amazing.”

“He needs someone who can start working right away and who is willing to sign an NDA. Dude is crazy on privacy.”

“I really don’t think he’ll hire me. And why is his assistant talking to you about it? Shouldn’t she go to an agency?”

“She has a lot on her plate working for Knox; he is very demanding.” She tapped her chin and looked up. “I wonder if he’s demanding in bed too.”

“Don’t even go there.”

“I bet he has a huge dick to match that personality.” I covered my ears and Poppy slapped my hands away. “You have to try for this job. A friend of mine worked as a private chef for him a couple of times. Hunter Knox pays well, Amy.” He had deep pockets.

“I bet he does, and he expects people to know what they’re doing.”

“Here’s how it is. Yes, I want you to go to that interview because I feel like I’m partially to blame for what happened with Sylvia and I want you to live your life again, but I also know there’s no one more prepared to take care of that baby.”

“Yes, there are people way more prepared. That’s literally my entire point.”

“She’s one and her mom is dead, her dad is a criminal and all she has is Hunter Knox, which is the closest thing to a human android I have ever seen. Emily said he is looking for someone—anyone—in his family that could take that baby. Ok, you’re right, you don’t know a lot about babies, but you are sweet and loving and she needs a little of that. I don’t know, I just thought it was something you’d want to do.”

This sneaky bitch! Yes, of course it was something I wanted to do. I was abandoned at a fire station when I was six months old. I knew all about being left alone with no one to protect you. Poppy knew all that.

“Fine.”
