I had no makeup on and my hair was up in a ponytail. He was trying too hard.

“Umm, can I help you?”

“Yes. I have a package for Hunter Knox.”

“Oh.”

“Does he live here?”

“He’s, umm, my boyfriend.”God, don’t let anyone know I said that. “I can sign for it.”

“Damn, you have a boyfriend?”

“I do. Can I have the package now, please?” I used that tone that always made my kids at school behave.

The courier handed me a box wrapped in black plastic and made me sign for it, so I took it under my name. He did ask me for my number before going away and I was saved by Sofi’s scream who was getting bored by herself in the kitchen. I closed the door without saying goodbye and went back to the baby who was in a fight with a strawberry, trying to turn it into juice.

“Come on, Sofi, you can take that red bastard. Squeeze it.” I kissed her forehead. “Later today, I will take you out on a walk in your new stroller and we will go buy you a lot of toys. And your grumpy uncle is going to pay for all of them.”

She approved with a high-pitched sound and I laughed.

Speaking of Sofi’s uncle, I was still hanging on to his package that was labeled ‘discreet’ and I decided to put it on the living room bar so he would see it when he was back home. Sofi started to mellow down in her highchair and her eyes were hanging heavy. It was too early for a nap, but her sleeping schedule was hectic, so I decided to let it slip today, since I was planning on keeping her out of the house most of the afternoon. I took her to her bed and she went down like a rock.

I went back downstairs, cleaned the mess we made, and my plan was to go back upstairs—as ordered—but the package that was delivered for Hunter earlier caught my eye. I knew it was none of my business, but I was a little curious about what was inside. You can’t label something ‘discreet’ and expect people to not want to look inside. I wasn’t going to open it, of course, but maybe the bar wasn’t the best place to leave it. What if somebody else would walk in and see itandactually open it? I was sure Hunter would blame me for that, and I didn’t want to be on his bad side.

Bad girls get punished. His words echoed between the walls of my mind. I would rather get a reward like I did last night.

I took the package and started walking around, trying to decide where the hell I should put it. I couldn’t put itunderthe coffee table because there was a strong chance Hunter wouldn’t look there and I couldn’t put itonthe coffee table because it was still in plain view. Should I leave it on the couch? Maybe in the kitchen or on one of the chairs at the dining table? So many damn choices for one fucking package.

My phone rang in the back pocket of my jeans and I answered without looking at the screen. I was too focused scanning the room for the perfect place.

“Hello.”

“Hey, babe!” Poppy’s voice exploded from the speaker.

“Oh, hi!”

“How are you? How was the first night in the fortress?” She was saying it like I’d gone to live in a jail or something.

“It was…fine.”

“Wow, what happened?”

I wasn’t going to break the NDA Hunter make me sign and tell Poppy about our encounter. I wanted to, she was my best friend, but Hunter had a right to his privacy. All of Las Vegas liked to gossip about his life, and I wasn’t going to add to that, especially whenIwas a part of it.

“Nothing happened, Poppy.”

“You sounded weird. Like something happened.”

“It’s still a little weird to live with Las Vegas’ own most eligible bachelor in his multi-million-dollar villa. I might need more than a day to feel comfortable.”

“I see. You don’t like it?”

“No, I do. The place is beautiful and Sofi is amazing. I can’t wait for you to meet her. Poppy, she is literally the best baby.”

“Oh, good. And Mr. Knox?”

Images from last night started to play on the back of my eyelids.
