“I just wanted to know if everything is working as it should. I hired her for you so I would take a failure very personally.”

“She’s doing fine.”

Fine was all I was going to give Emily because I didn’t think I could say another word about Amelia without mentioning her orgasm and how good she looked on her knees looking up at me.

When I left the building Raoul was waiting next to the car, and he drove me home in record time. I hadn’t paid much attention to the road because I had expense reports to read, but when we drove through the gates of my house, I’d heard a sound behind the car. When I looked to check what it was, I noticed a cherry-red shabby Honda driving close behind.

“What the hell? Raoul, why the fuck is there someone driving through my gates?” I was not a fan of security breaches and I was paying too much money to have people just drive in as they pleased.

He checked the rearview mirror and cleared his throat.

“That would be Miss Hart’s car, Mr. Knox.”

She was drivingthatthing? It was a box on wheels, not a car.

Raoul opened the door for me in front of the house, and I saw the red Honda parked around the corner. That’s why I hadn’t seen it before. She hid it there.

“Miss Hart,” I barked when Raoul turned the car around and disappeared.

She was bent over, looking for something, and I had to call her name a couple of times before she turned to face me.

“Shh!”Did she just fucking shush me?

“Don’t you order me around, Amelia.”

“You are going to wake her up!” she whisper-yelled.

“What?”

“Sofi is sleeping in the car seat. Don’t speak so loudly.”

“She’s…you’ve been out with her?”

“Did you think I would have left her alone, Mr. Knox?” She crossed her arms and looked at me with a mocking expression. If she kept going like that, she’d find herself with a red ass soon.

“I thought you’d call a sitter. I told you, per your contract, you are entitled to a day off every week.”

“It’s my second day, I don’t need time off. I had to do some shopping and load up on some groceries. Sofi needs to start on solid foods and even though fruits and vegetables are good, she needed a few more things. I hope you don’t mind.”

“You do whatever you have to do to make her happy, Miss Hart.” It was why I’d hired her in the first place.

“Food, a good sleep schedule, and activities only make her healthy, Mr. Knox.” She paused to emphasize her point. “The only thing that can make kids happy is love and affection.”

This was not my kitten. This woman was someone who was used to standing up for children and she was coming straight for my throat. Her tone was pretty clear—she thought I was the world’s most dark-hearted asshole for throwing my niece away like she was garbage. I was indeed the world’s most dark-hearted asshole, but I was doing the right thing by Sofi. I was not fit or worthy to be in her life, so why make it worse by staying around her until someone else stepped up to the plate to raise her.

“I guess you’ll have to give her that too, Miss Hart.” It was because I loved Sofi so much that I wanted her to live with someone who could care for her, so she didn’t end up like Elena, but fuck if I was going to give the nanny an explanation.

I turned on my heel and left, aiming straight for the bar and pouring myself some McAllen to smooth the roar in my chest. I was torn between the sadness of having to keep my distance from my own flesh and blood and the need of swooping Amelia off her feet and take her into the basement so I could feast on her body for hours, teach her to never shush me ever again.

The front door opened and she came in with two huge bags and dragging the car seat along. Damn this woman.

I walked to her and picked up the bags.

“Why didn’t you ask me for help, Amelia?”

“You’re the boss, Mr. Knox. It’s not your job to carry groceries. Can you pay attention to Sofi for a second? I have some other things to get from the car.”

“How many things?”
