Chapter 11

Amelia

I was having the best sleep of my life on the best pillow in the world—Hunter’s chest. One of his arms was holding me close, he had his nose in my hair, and my leg was thrown over his waist. It was perfect until the very vicious and commanding scream pulled me out of my sleep. My head shot up because of the noise, but I couldn’t see anything in sight. Hunter’s eyes opened too.

“What is it, Kitten?” His voice was rough and cracked in the morning. Add to that his messy hair and he was one hundred percent fuckable.

“I…thought I heard someone scream.”

“It was a dream. Go back to sleep.”

My lids were already down when the sound shot through the room again, but this time I knew it was coming from the baby monitor.

“Oh, my God! Sofi.” I jumped to my feet. The digital clock on Hunter’s bed stand said it was already past nine o’clock. “I overslept.” I started to run around the room, but couldn’t find the damn robe I had on last night, so I just put on Hunter’s satin pajama pants, ran into his closet, and grabbed the first t-shirt I saw.

I could feel Hunter’s eyes on me, but I didn’t stop to look back. I flew out of the room like demons from hell were chasing me around the house. What was in my head? I just sat there sleeping, not even thinking that Sofi would need me in the morning. What kind of nanny was I? I wasn’t, that was the damn problem. I had no training for this job. I should have told Poppy to take this job offer and shove it up where the sun doesn’t shine. Sofi has been through enough, she needed someone competent and capable, not a failing teacher who was more focused on sleeping with the boss and getting handcuffed to his bed than taking care of her.

In the nursery, I found Sofi sitting on her butt, crying because no one was paying attention to her.

“Hey, baby girl. Hey, it’s ok. I’m here now. I’m so sorry for being late.”

“Aaaah!” she replied and kicked the air with her feet when I picked her up. The crying started to tone down when I put her head on my chest.

“I’m so sorry. Are you hungry? Do you want to eat, Sofi?” She looked at me with teary eyes and red cheeks, and I asked again. “Hungry?”

“Babababa.” That was definitely a positive response, so I walked with her to the kitchen. I knew I had formula bottles in the fridge because I noticed Sofi always woke up with a big appetite. All I had to do was pop one in the microwave and wait for a couple of minutes.

The moment Sofi saw the bottle she reached for it and let out a mad cry when I put it in the microwave instead of her hands.

“Not yet, baby girl. We need the food to heat up.” My words did nothing to calm her down. Instead, Sofi decided to have a one-sided screaming match with the microwave. “Hey, shh! Please, Sofi, help me out here. I know, I should have had this bottle waiting for you, but…I’m sorry.” I sighed.

“Aya!Cuppa. Gimmi cuppa.”

I gaped at Sofi for a second. Every time I fed her, I asked if she wanted me to give her thecup, because bottle seemed too big a word to start with. She was already starting to form words?

“What? You said something, baby girl?”

She pointed at the microwave and cried out again.

“Aaa!”

“Shh, you’re going to eat in a minute, baby girl.” She took my shirt in her fists and pulled. “Oh, please don’t ruin this. I took it from your uncle. And please, please, try to calm down because you know he doesn’t like us making this much noise.”

“You stole that t-shirt, Amelia.” I jumped and spun around, clutching Sofi to my chest, when I’d heard Hunter’s voice booming in the kitchen.

“Hunt…Mr. Knox. I’m sorry. I had to feed her and I usually heat up her bottles before she wakes up. I couldn’t leave her alone in the nursery. She was very hungry because I…I…I…” My cheeks burst into flames.

“Because you overslept.”

“Yes.” My voice was just about a whisper and I cleared my throat to be able to speak louder. “Perhaps…perhaps you should look for a real nanny.”

His hand froze mid-air while he was reaching for a coffee cup and his perfect jaw clenched.

“You’re dropping the towel. One night, and you’re already running?”

“What?”

“Damn it.” He slapped his hand to the counter. Sofi turned her head to see what was with all the noise. “I’ve been gentle, Amelia. I took it slow with you. You said,” he growled, “you said you’ll let me teach you how to be mine and after one day, you quit.”
