Chapter 13

Amelia

What was I getting ready for? After he said he wanted to take me out, I walked on clouds, but then he stayed six feet away from me at all times and my excitement deflated. I was sure he forgot about it entirely, but now he said we’re indeed going out. The fact that Hunter wants us to go somewhere public while I had the collar around my neck scared me to death, but I was also too curious to refuse. Not that he was the kind of man to take no for an answer.

Not knowing how to dress, I started with my makeup and hair, pulling my locks into a high ponytail, and then stared at my closet for many minutes. In the end I picked out a black dress, not too long, not too short, not too tight, not too anything. It had a low cut and short sleeves, maybe not what I would normally pick for a night out, but I had no idea where Hunter was taking me, so this was the safest option.

I checked on Sofi two times before gathering my courage to go downstairs to face Hunter. I found him talking to a young woman with brown hair and big, dreamy blue eyes. I had to stop and swallow hard when I saw that Hunter changed and had on an impeccable black suit. His jacket was off and the way that black silk shirt was molding to his body made my mouth dry out.

The two were in the middle of a conversation, but his voice was commanding the room.

“I hope the agency told you that you’d be needed here overnight.”

“You’re paying for twenty-four hours of babysitting, Mr. Knox. I’ll be here.”

“Good.” He raised his head and found me watching them from the stairs. “Amelia, I see you’re ready.”

“Yes. Is this the sitter?”

She responded before Hunter had the chance.

“Yes, ma’am. My name is Georgia Andrews from Baby Boom Sitting agency. I will be taking very good care of your niece tonight.”

My niece?

“Thank you. Sofi is already asleep and she—hopefully—will be through the night, but she still wakes up sometimes.”

“Ok.” Georgia smiled.

“If she wakes up, she’ll cry for a bottle, but don’t give her one. She is well fed, but if the crying gets too much, try fruit. There’s fresh cantaloupe and blueberries in the fridge.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“And she loves her stuffed animals, so have one on hand at all times. It’s a very good distraction.”

“Will do.”

“If she’s indisposed and cries, put her on your chest. She will lay her head on you—it’s very adorable—and she’ll calm down.”

“Ok, that’s what I’ll do.”

“Amelia.” Hunter came behind me and put his hands on my shoulders. “Miss Andrews has very good credentials. I’m sure she’s going to take good care of Sofi.”

“I know.” I sighed. “I’m just anxious to leave her alone.”

Hunter did something that took me by surprise. He smiled. He fucking smiled, and I’m not talking about his malicious ‘come here so I can fuck you’ smile. This was warm and genuine and it really caught me off guard.

He leaned over to whisper into my ear.

“Good girl.” It sent shivers down my spine. “Let’s leave Miss Andrews to her business now and let’s go get you ready.”

I felt an inexplicable pleasure when he called me Amelia, but used the sitter’s last name. It gave me a sense of intimacy that I was craving from Hunter.

“I am ready.”

“This dress won’t cut it. I bought you something.”

“Ok.”
