“You’re here to occupy a nanny position. I would expect you to talk about the things that qualify you for it, Miss Hart.”

“I…” I stopped to swallow. “Well, you have my resume, and…”

“I haven’t read it.”

Was he serious?

“You didn’t?”

“No. If Emily saw it and she still called you in, there’s no reason for me to read it.”

Then what the hell did he want from me? It would have been a million times better if I could have just taken this interview with Emily. Ugh, Poppy was going to owe me a drink for this.

“Ok, umm, I am a teacher, I’m currently not working in a school, though. I graduated from the University of Nevada…”

Knox decided to cut in again.

“Do you know how to take care of a baby or not?”

The million-dollar question.

“I work with children, Mr. Knox, and even though they’re not toddlers, it’s still the same. I’ve also volunteered in orphanages when I was in college and took care of all age groups.”

He jumped into his leather chair and gave me a mean look, but failed to invite me to take a seat too.

“So, you’re not a nanny.”

“Not per se, no, but I love children.”

“Ok, look, I don’t want to drag this shit out more than needed so I’m going to cut to the chase. I need someone who can look after my niece twenty-four-seven, live here, take her to the doctor, to the park, or whatever other things kids need, and make this inconvenience go away.”

What the hell? He was calling his niece an inconvenience? Wow. Asshole seem too soft describe Knox’s true essence.

“Wait, this is a live-in position?”

“Yes. I will not allow you to take the baby to your house and someone needs to watch her during the night.” There was no doubt it wasn’t going to be him. He wasn’t looking for a nanny, he was looking for some kind of surrogate mother to make his life easier. “If you can’t do it, you can go.”

“I can do it,” I said without hesitation. There was no way in hell I would walk away from that baby now. She was living under the same roof with a heartless tinman and she needed someone in her corner. “I’ll have to work out some kind of arrangement with my roommate, but I can do it.”

“Good. It’s a short-term position, your contract will be six-months long, and if your services won’t be needed the entirety, I will still pay you in full.”

“Why just six months? Is this a probation period?”

His face turned to stone, and I knew that was a question he didn’t want to answer.

“Not that it is any of your business, but my guardianship over Sofi is only temporary. I’m working on vetting some of her other relatives for permanent placement.”

“I see.” He was getting rid of theinconvenience. Well, at least at the end of this, the baby would get a loving family and won’t be forced to live in this glass box with this stone-cold jackass.

“I need you to start as soon as possible because the temporary sitter I have now can’t work nights and my driver and Emily are not particularly skilled at night feeds.” So he went through the whole roster, but didn’t try to watch that kid himself. It took a lot to not glare and call him names.

“I can start whenever you need me. All I have to do is talk to my roommate, secure the money for next month’s rent, and pick up my clothes.”

“I will cover your living expenses for the next six months, so you have a home to go back to when this is over.” Well, I wasn’t going to say no to that. “Do you have a car?”

“Yes.”

“Good. You’ll also have a credit card for groceries, toys, whatever the baby needs and you can occupy one of the guest suites on the western side of the house. It’s close to the nursery.” He was giving me an entire suite to live in? That was unexpected even from someone stupid rich. “Any questions?”
