Chapter 16

Amelia

Sofi and I were spoiled all weekend. Hunter stayed close, hadn’t asked me to hide his niece in her room anymore, and even dared to get in contact with her. He didn’t flinch anymore when I pushed her in his arms or when Sofi stretched her little hands to grab at his shirt, asking for a hug. She even fell asleep on his chest once and I just sat there watching them in awe.

On Sunday, we took the baby to a park close to Hunter’s house and we had a picnic. I would have been more enthusiastic about that if everything hadn’t happened under Raoul’s vigilant watch. Hunter didn’t hold back, holding my hand and kissing me, but I still wasn’t all that comfortable in front of another one of his employees. Raoul, on the other hand, was very courteous, and didn’t seem bothered by what was happening in front of him.

The fairytale ended Monday afternoon when Hunter was called on a business trip in Los Angeles and was gone for most of the week. He called a couple of times to check in, but I missed him. We both did—Sofi kept looking around the house, expecting him to pop out of somewhere. To kill time and feel less lonely while Hunter was away, I called Poppy and she came over a couple of times. Today, she stopped by before work.

“Amy!” she called my name while I was coming out of the bathroom.

“Yes, babe.”

“Sofi looks hungry. Can I give her a chocolate bar?”

“No, Poppy. She’s a baby.” I rolled my eyes. Sofi was stealing my best friend very fast.

“But I want to spoil her.”

“You can spoil her with a bottle of formula.”

“Ugh, fine, but formula is no fun. Can I at least buy her another dress?”

Sofi was already in a pink and blue onesie that Poppy had brought with her.

“Pop, you really don’t have to buy her any more things. I have Hunter’s credit card for that.”

“I know. I’m sure uncle moneybags is taking care of everything, but her favorite girl, Poppy, can bring gifts. She’s just too sweet.”

“I know. It’s impossible not to love her.” I put Sofi in her car seat because it was her favorite place to have her bottle and turned back to Poppy. “Even Hunter melted in front of her.”

“Is Sofi going to stay here long term after all?”

That was the million-dollar question.

“I’m not allowed to discuss private business with anyone.”

“You’re not going to break the NDA for your best friend?”

“No.” I knew that Poppy would never say a word, but breaking Hunter’s trust was out of the question. He was my boss. He was the man I loved.

“So, we’re not going to talk about the elephant in the room?”

“What elephant?”

“Mr. Knox?” She raised an eyebrow. “Or how you like to call him lately, Hunter. When you took the job you were terrified of him and now you look more relaxed in his house than at our own place. You act like you’re Sofi’s mother and even if you shoved it in your pants, I can see that’s a man’s shirt. A very expensive man's shirt. Spill.”

My cheeks started burning. Poppy was always good at reading me like I was her damn diary.

“Poppy, I really can’t discussMr. Knox’sprivate business.” I was his private business.

“Mhm, ok. I saw him this morning when I went to pick up my car from the bar’s parking lot. I’m not all up close and personal with my boss—like you—but for the first time ever, Knox didn’t have a scowl on his face. You’re screwing him, aren’t you?”

“Poppy!” I didn’t know why I was so outraged. I was screwing Hunter and then some. “I’m not commenting on this. You saw Hunter today?”

“Yeah. You didn’t?”

He was back! I felt my heart settling in my chest just from knowing Hunter was back in Las Vegas. Tonight, he’d be back and his arms would hold me again. Damn, I was such a goner. He had me wrapped around his finger with my hands tied behind my back and a gag in my mouth. Literally.
