“I don’t have a job right now, but I have the money you paid me. I have a place to live even if I’d be a single parent. You’ll never have to worry about Sofi being loved and taken care of. Just give her to me, not to someone else. Someone you don’t know.”

“Take a deep breath,” he repeated.

“Hunter, please.”

“Amelia, listen to me. Listen to my voice!” he ordered, sensing how close I was to a meltdown. “We traced your phone, ok. I’ll get to you soon. I’ll be there to get you, kitten.”

“You’ll give her away.” I glanced at Sofi’s beautiful eyes, so much like her uncle’s, and cried harder.

“The adoption papers were for me,” he said in one breath. “Are you listening to me, Amelia? The woman that came, she needed documents so I could legally adopt Sofi.”

“What?”

“I’m not giving her away,” he whispered. “I’m keeping you both. All of this was a fucking misunderstanding.”

“Hunter…” I was caught between distrust and a crushing wave of relief. “God, what have I done? I took her…I…” He must have been terrified.

He had a heart and it belonged to Sofi and me. I was overwhelmed, thinking about the words he was saying. I heard every single one, but it seemed too much of a miracle to be true.

“Nothing happened. I’m coming to you now, kitten.”

“We’re at the park.”

“I know. I’m driving out the gates now. Ten minutes and I’ll be there. There’s a police car behind me. I don’t want you to get scared, ok?”

“I…You’re angry.”

“I’m not. I’m just happy you’re both safe.”

I wanted to say something else. There were so many things I wanted to tell him, but the conversation was cut short when a hand pulled my phone from my ear and threw it in the dark. I screamed and jumped back, grabbing on Sofi’s car seat and pulling it behind me.

A man was standing next to the bench, dressed in a courier uniform with his face mostly hidden under a ballcap. His posture was nonchalant, with both hands in his pockets and his shoulders slumped.

“So, you are not the girlfriend,” he said. “You are the nanny.”

“W-what?” He took a step towards me and I raised my hand. “Stay where you are.”

“You pretty much fucked up my plan when you opened the door and told me that motherfucker has a girlfriend.” He pulled his cap up so I could see his face. I finally recognized him. He delivered the package, my collar.

“Sir, I don’t know what you want, but you need to leave.”

“What I want is my daughter, but every time I try to come to get her, you are in my fucking way. Give her to me now.”

My pulse increased to the limits and I was frozen with a shiver of fear.Sofi’s father. He was no courier; he was the murderer that orphaned a child and now we were standing face to face.

“I said stay away. I don’t know what…just leave.”

“My kid. Give it.”

“Hunter will be here soon. You should leave.” I wanted to sound threatening, but my voice was shaky. “He will kill you for what you did.”

“He can try, but I’m the only one with experience here.” He spoke with such ease about killing Elena, the mother of his child, it was paralyzing. That’s when I knew that he wasn’t just dangerous. He was sick.

“Sofi has nothing to do with any of this.”

“You know, I never liked that name, but that bitch never asked me what I wanted the kid to be named. I think I’ll call her Kim from now on.” He looked up at the sky. “Yes, Kim. I like it. Ok, now, give me the fucking baby before that fucker comes here and tries to stop me. I’m done with this fucking Knox family. Elena thought they were so fucking special because they’re rich, but she was wrong.”

“If you’re done with them, then leave.”
