It was times like this when believing in God would be useful. Maybe if I could pray, the time wouldn’t move so slow.

Finally, like she’d heard the calling of my pain, Amelia woke up. Her eyes snapped open and she looked around franticly, trying to push herself up.

“Hey!” I jumped out of my chair and pressed my hand on her shoulders, forcing her back in the bed.

“No, no, no,” she mumbled. “I have to get to Sofi. Now.”

“Amelia! Amelia, look at me.”

“Hunter? Where…”

“Sofi is alright. She is safe, baby. You saved her. Poppy is with her at home now.”

“She is?” Her beautiful eyes filled with tears. “Oh, thank God.”

“My beautiful kitten.” I pressed my lips on her forehead. “You’re ok.”

“Hunter.” She clutched at my shirt and buried her face in my chest. “I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry.”

“Shh. Look at me.” She did and I smiled. “You once you told me there’s only one person to blame for Elena’s death. This is no different, Amelia. I’m not blaming you for anything and you won’t do it, either. I won’t let you.”

“I took her.”

“I should have told you, but I wanted the adoption to be a surprise. I wanted that piece of paper that stated Sofi was my daughter to be the present I’d give you the first time I said how fucking much I love you both.”

She gulped, her eyes wide.

“Can I…can I have some water?”

I jumped up to comply with her request.

“Kitten try to not move, ok. Your wound could come open again.”

“I don’t give a damn about my wound, Hunter. You love me?”

There were no words to describe the dimension of my feelings for her, so I’d have to improvise.

“More than you could ever know. You make my heart beat. The gifts you’ve given me—your body, your heart, Sofi—I’ll spend the rest of my life thanking you for everything. My main goal is to love you the way you deserve.”

“You’re the love of my life, Hunter Knox. All I need is you and Sofi.” She smiled and looked at me through her thick lashes. “And maybe a pair of handcuffs.”

I tilted her chin so I could kiss her.

“My good little kitten. You’re out of commission for a long time, but the collar is waiting for you at home. So is your leash.”

The flash of pure happiness in her eyes disappeared as soon as I saw it.

“Hunter, what happened with…with Sofi’s father?”

“I’m her father.” I stated strongly. Legally, I was, and even without that piece of paper, Jason Klain had no claim over Sofi. His name would never be spoken again. That piece of shit was history. “He didn’t make it.”

I should have been more delicate. Her hands started shaking as soon as I was done talking.

“Oh, God,” she whispered weakly. The torture of taking a life was a burden too big for Amelia, and I was ready to take it on me.

“It wasn’t you, kitten. It was me,” I lied. “When I got there, he was trying to get to you and I finished what you started. It wasn’t you.”

“H-he…he…”
