Combat Royale – Phase I

We were never leaving this island alive.

I hadn’t been sure of this until I saw the ease with which the prisoners killed their opponent in the first phase of the tournament.

Each participant had been carefully selected for his or her fighting skills. So, whoever put Eric and I here wanted to make sure we stayed alive long enough to give the crowd a good show, but not so long that we overstayed our welcome.

The thought was further cemented when the female, who welcomed me with a throat slashing, demolished her opponent in five moves and easily won her match.

I was currently in an open area located as far away from the guests as possible.

The fighters who hadn’t yet performed for the crowd were beside me waiting for their turn, while the winners of phase one idly watched the tournament roll on.

The jubilant spectators gave the female fighter a standing ovation and chanted her name, while she crowed her triumph on the screen.

“NAM! NAM! NAM!”

Unluckily for me, the love fest continued in the locker room, with her teammates giving her a hero welcome.

“Terrific fight, Nam. Unbelievable. You’re going to win this Combat Royale for sure.”

I couldn’t help but snicker at the brown-nosers, which, of course, got me her attention.

“Do you have something to say to me? Because if you do, bring it, whore!”

I ignored her ass. The bitch has been trying to get me to lose my cool since I’ve had the misfortune of meeting her. Today wasn’t any different. I ignored her antics and continued to watch the fights on the screen.

“Introducing our very first Navy Seal with an unknown track record of kills. He stands 6′5″ and weighs 250lbs. Presenting an enemy to the American Guild, Commander Eric Winslow of the New World Order!”

The crowd booed as Eric entered the arena, all dark and menacing, while a female voice sneered at me from the other side of the room.

“Oooooooorion.”

Look who just graduated to 5th grade.

“Ooooooorion,” the woman taunted again. “Your little man is going to die.”

Right. How much are you willing to put on that?

“Introducing the biggest and meanest fighter, with a confirmed 27 kills. He stands seven feet tall and weighs 300lbs. of pure muscle. Presenting CERBERUS!”

I stared at the mammoth on the screen in search of weaknesses, only to find none.

That Eric was facing him in his first match wasn’t random. Hayes hated my husband and wanted him to suffer.

Cerberus attacked first with a huge overhand punch that would have broken Eric’s jaw if my man hadn’t swerved out of the way.

“Your little man is about to be crushed by mine, Orion!”
