In any case, fewer prisoners meant fewer opponents for us in the arena, and that was a cold, hard truth.

I was about to pass the infirmary when Hayes’ voice halted me in my tracks. I hid in the dark corner of a wall, away from prying eyes, and peered over my shoulder to see what was going on.

“Did you have anything to do with what happened tonight, my little mouse?” Hayes inquired with a benevolent smile that made him look demented.

“How could I when I was here all evening?” Orion answered weakly.

“Yes, they told me. Poison. But I can’t seem to believe you for some reason.” He looked at her strangely.

“I don’t know why, Head Chief. I had nothing to do with the riot. I was here throwing my liver up.”

“Right. Are you feeling better?”

“Yes, the nurse gave me an antidote. Good thing you carry that type around.”

Yes, it was. It was even better that the nurse was Diego’s mother.

“Can I go back to my cell?”

“Before you do, I have a gift for you.” He held out two black titanium twenty-two-inch steel batons out.

“What is this?”

“These are your old batons.”

“The ones I lost at the Academy.”

“Yes.”

“You’ve had them for all this time?”

“Yes.”

“I’m not sure what to say.”

I do. That hombre is one loco son of a bitch. Who holds on to something that doesn’t belong to them for almost twenty years?

“What do you want me to do with these?”

“They are for your tournament match.” Orion tried to grab them, only for him to keep them out of reach.

“A thank you would be nice.” The man walked into her personal space.

“Thank you.”

“That’s not what I meant.” He looked at her intensely before backing her against the wall.

Fuck.

The man grabbed Orion by the throat and forced his tongue into her mouth. I was about to intervene when his nosed wrinkled less than a second into it, and he began sniffing her neck.

“You disappoint me, little mouse. Again.”

“How?”

“I can smell him on you. Have you chosen that bastard over me?”

“He is my husband.” The crazy fucker rammed his fist into the wall right beside her face, making a dent.
