Pain exploded when a num-chuk hit my hand, making me drop a baton. When my opponent tried to hit me a second time, Eric shielded me just long enough for me to grab the titanium stick.

“Huh, hello? A hand?” Suri yelled as she fought off three opponents. Her katana was being wielded at a lightning speed, but even that wasn’t enough to stop the people closing in on her.

“Go help Nam,” my husband ordered as he grabbed his opponent’s arm and broke it in two before hitting another one in the face with his shield.

I ran to the Latina and slid on the sand right into two pairs of legs at the last possible minute. The move knocked them off their game, giving me three precious seconds.

I knocked the first woman unconscious with a well-placed fist to her temple, but barely avoided the blade of the second fighter.

“Pay attention to your surroundings, you moron,” Suri swore as she blocked the thrust.

I ignored her surly mood and took advantage of the fact that my opponent was stuck in between Suri’s blade and the unconscious woman’s shield to shatter his kneecap with my reinforced combat boots.

His howl could be heard all the way up the bleachers, and the crowd shouted in glee.

A baseball bat came at me from the right, but I was ready this time.

I evaded the heavy club, flipped back up, and backed away as the male fighter flailed the bat. He missed my head and ended up hitting the wall instead. The plaster exploded, covering us with drywall.

“When you’re done playing, Orion, we need to take out more of these motherfuckers.”

“What the hell do you think I’m trying to do?”

“I really have no clue. This isn’t your fancy school, you moron. Take care of him, Orion.”

I hated that bitch. Passionately and vigorously. But she was right. I’d been trying to take my opponents out with the least amount of damage because it wasn’t their fault they were here.

But this line of thinking will get me and the rest of my crew killed.

I armed myself with resolve and did what I needed to do to survive. I analyzed my opponent’s weakness as he tried to bash my head.

The man was strong and swung the bat with brute force. Every time he did, however, he lost his balance, and this made him vulnerable.

When the man came at me again, I followed his swing and violently hit the back of his thick neck, paralyzing him.

Regrettably, I didn’t see the knife that came at me and got stabbed for my neglect.

A white-hot searing pain went up my side as I struggled with my attacker to stop him from thrusting the knife even deeper.

I hit him in the face once, twice while holding on to the knife with all my strength.

I thought for sure I was done for, when the man was run through by my extremely PISSED OFF husband, and I was sprayed with blood.

“How are you doing? Can you continue?”

“It’s a flesh wound,” I lied. I took out my shirt and wrapped it tightly around my side to stem the blood.

“How many are left?”

“Three. They were waiting for the others to finish us.”

“Who are they?”

“Skull’s crew. The tall one over there is his brother. So, watch your six,” Suri answered. She looked as battered and bruised as I felt.

“I’ll take the one with the batons,” I told the other two and ignored the ache in my side.

“Shield.”
