“My wife needs medical help.”

The man frowned, “Right. Of course. Can we send in a medic, please?”

Instead of the nurses on guard coming closer, we saw Hayes detached himself from his men.

There was something wrong with his eyes. Even from here, you could see they were twitching uncontrollably.

“Winslow!!!!” Hayes screamed like a demented animal and pandemonium ensued. “It’s you and me, Winslow.”

I ground my teeth as rage poisoned my brain, making it difficult to think.

“He’s mine,” I told him before my husband got any bright ideas. This fight has been a long time coming, and over my dead body is someone taking it from me.

“You can’t fight him. You can barely stand up straight,” Eric stated.

“I will be fine. I have waited all my life for this.”

“Babe, he doesn’t want you. He wants to fight me. Just look at the fucker. The very idea of taking me on has him jonesing like an addict.”

“I don’t care.” Yeah, no intelligent life form here.

“Do you know what it feels like to be prey? To know you have no control over your life because your safety was put in the hands of an animal. I have lived half of my life feeling like that. Every decision I’ve ever made was not my own, and now I finally…”

The bitch flicked me on my injury, making me inhale swiftly as pain exploded in my side. “Owwwwww.”

“You done?” Suri asked in a belligerent tone.

“What the hell was that for?”

“That was to bring you back to earth, you moron.”

“Stay out of this. This does not concern you, Suri.”

“You can’t take on the Irish Butcher,” Eric declared calmly. I was about to argue when he continued, “Look at your wound. All she did was flick you, and it split open.”

I look at him mutinously. “You don’t know what I went through.”

“Yes, I do. I may not have been physically next to you, but I was there with you every single night of your captivity. I know what he represents to you, to us, but if you calm down, you’ll realize that he isn’t the one you want. Not really.”

“O, we need to win against him, or we’ll be thrown into the pit. I can’t just stand by and watch while you decide to be stubborn at about the worst possible time.” Suri gently closed her hand on my shoulder. “Let your husband fight him. I’ve been here for three years. I deserve a chance to be freed.”

She was right. They both were.

“We’re never leaving this island. You and I both know it.”

“Maybe, and maybe not. But the only way we’ll know for sure is if we see this through.”

I fight off the emotions threatening to overpower me. I had to let it go. I hated the idea of my husband having to defend me like a fragile princess, but this was about more than me.

“Fine. Go. But if you get yourself killed, Eric, I will revive you just long enough to kick your ass and kill you myself.”

My threat would probably have had more meaning if I hadn’t vacillated on my feet while I said it.

My man grabbed me into a hard kiss that made Hayes froth at the mouth.

“I will help you get to Commander Moore,” he promised.

I nodded and followed the nurse as they guided me away from the arena while my husband prepared to face the Irish Butcher.

And not a moment too soon. My line of vision darkened as I exited the arena. Two seconds later, I passed out from blood loss.
