“All the electronics are going crazy. Go see what’s happening. Make sure the men are prepared for an attack.”

“Right away, Sire.”

After the guards hurriedly left to do his bidding, Baxter turned toward his faithful servant, Philippe, and ordered, “Ask Kent to prepare the jet. I think our security system may be compromised.”

“Are you positive, Sire? The system is linked to our satellites. Hacking into them would take a lot more dexterity than one team could provide.”

“How else would you explain this?”

“I don’t know, Sire.”

Baxter opened his vault and was hurriedly stuffing the content of the safe in his briefcase when his television blinked, and Gabriel Winthrop appeared on the giant screen wearing an expensive-looking suit and tie.

“My fellow Guild members. Some of you may know me, some may not. For those who don’t, please let me introduce myself.

My name is Gabriel Winthrop, son of exiled members, William Winthrop and Serena Baas.

I’ve temporarily taken over your communication system because it is important that all members of the American Guild hear this.

The Network’s Executive Table recently appointed me interim General of the American Guild.

My nomination is contingent upon two things, the dismantlement of the current administration and the establishment of a new world order until a vote can be done by you, through proper channels.

I’m not really worried about the latter. Like I mentioned to the Executive Table, if you tolerated an asshole like Baxter for such a long time, you will absolutely love me.

But the former is another matter completely. I’m here to call upon your good judgment.

I understand where you’re coming from. We live in a free society and don’t want to be told what to do by a foreign entity.

Some may convince themselves that I’m the Table’s pawn, a puppet to be led by others.

Let me reassure you, I was not given the position because the Table wished to have an in within the American Network.

I’m here because your old general broke the thirteen commandments of the Creed.

He committed crimes against humanity that are so dreadful, I cannot in good conscience reveal them here when I know there are some small ears listening.

I’m here because my stepfather, Lieutenant Bradley Stryker, believes I can make our Guild better.

General Baxter’s reign of terror has ended.

I know some of you have been living in fear for a long time. I promise to protect you with my life, to make our nation safe, and to make it great.

BUT, because there is a but. War is about having two sides. You can choose to be on mine, or you can choose to stay faithful to him. Should you choose option number two, I want to show you what you will be up against.”

Asheron Aslanov and the six generals appeared, followed by Bradley Stryker, Sarah Murdoch and Eric Winslow, Elise and Vasily Aslanov, Lu Wei, and about a thousand other faces.

“You do not need to be in the middle of this. In fact, I’d prefer it if you didn’t. All you have to do is stand down. Don’t get involved, let the cards play out.

If you don’t, if you aid General Baxter in any way, you will regret your decision when the smokes clear, and I’m standing victorious at the end of this.

And I will win this war, make no mistake about it.” Gabriel gave everyone a smile that showed all his teeth.

“Finally, my last message is addressed to General Colin Baxter of the previous administration. I hope you’re ready for us, motherfucker, because we are going to break you.”

The screen blinked out while rage boiled inside Baxter. He threw his glass into the television screen, and the thing broke into pieces.

“Are you all right, Sire?” More men came running down at the sound of a crash.
