“Computers take you to another world. One where the possibilities are limitless.”

“That’s highly doubtful. Such a device would exist only in weird science fiction movies like the Attack of the One-Legged Robot.”

“Sarah, you did not!”

“What?”

“What did I tell you about watching those awful shows? It will give you nightmares again.”

“I know, but Daddy said I could sleep with you anytime I want if I have a nightmare.”

“He did?” the woman answered, as she bit back a smile. It always amazed her how her daughter could sound like a mini-grown up one minute and a child the next.

“Yes, he did. But don’t worry about it, I won’t. He snores. I can’t wait to tell Daddy I saw my very first spawn of Satan.”

“Sarah!”

“What?”

“Language.”

The child rolled her eyes. She didn’t understand why her mother was offended by her words. Her father had used much worse to describe those electronic devices.

“Fine, I can’t wait to tell Daddy I saw my very first computer.”

“Better. Come on, let me show you how to turn it on.”

“But what if I get bored by it?” the child inquired.

“Give it a chance. If you don’t like it, I promise not to push, but something tells me you’re going to love it.”

It turns out that her mother had been right, she did fall in love with computers. They were like a billion books in one.

Sarah spent hours on the terminal, watching, and learning. When the child lock hindered her access to the Internet, she easily circumvented the security measure and absorbed everything like a sponge.

She even refused the pastry her mother offered her because the electronic device had all her attention.

Soon after, Diana finished her shift, and the two of them were on their way to their modest apartment.

“So? What did you think?”

“It was amazing. I played chess with someone in New Zealand for an hour!”

“Wow! Did you win?”

“Of course.”

“Then why do you look so sad?”

“I went on the Internet even though you told me not to.”

“Aren’t there child locks on every terminal to keep nosy little children from doing that?” Diana inquired.

“Yes.” Her daughter looked at the floor guiltily as they waited for the bus to arrive.

“Then, how were you able to go around them?”

“I spied on the person next to me when he used the password.”
