“She got shot trying to protect Bones.”

“Shit, put her on the bed. Did the bullet go through?”

“No, it’s still inside her.”

“We need to get her to a medic.”

“We can’t,” the Cajun muttered as he rubbed his face.

“Right. There’s a hospital in town, we can go there.”

“Again, we can’t. They’ll warn our legal guardians the second we step onto hospital grounds.”

The Guild assigned each of us an operative as a legal guardian. It made it easy for them to keep track of us and threw off the authorities whenever they came to the camp with regards to a “troubled” kid.

“You don’t have a choice, asshole. We need to get the bullet out ASAP.”

“No. Hospital. You know what they’ll do to us if they find out what we did,” Surinam pants. Bones pressed on her wound to stop the gush of blood, making her scream in pain.

“I know someone. He’s a vet. He’s about an hour’s drive from here. We can go to him and run from this place after he patches her up,” Cajun declared.

“Run? To go where?” I looked at him, baffled.

“Anywhere, as long as it’s not here.”

“They will catch you. You know you can’t run from the Guild.”

“It’s a chance I’m willing to take.”

So am I.Bones added.

“Have you two lost your mind????”

“Do you have a better idea? Because if you do, I’d love to hear it!” Cajun screamed. “You know what they’re going to do to her and to us when they find out.”

Yeah, I did. Doing something illegal without supervision was considered an act of insubordination. The Guild had no place for people who didn’t follow the rules. You can do the rest of the math.

“This is insane.”

“Stop arguing and go hotwire us a motherfucking car because we need to get the hell out of here,” he continued.

I did exactly that. I got dressed, stole a car and drove until I knew we were safe. The three of us were looking glum. Surinam had passed out from the pain and the Cajun cradled her head on his lap.

After half an hour, I stopped the car.

Why are you stopping?Bones signed.

“This is the end of the road for me.”

What? We can’t go back. They will execute us the minute we step onto the base,Bones signed, misunderstanding my meaning.

“Not you, my friend. Me. I have to go back.”

Come with us. There is nothing for you there.

Bones, they have my sister.I signed back, and this made him hesitate.

I’ve never told them anything about who I was and what I was doing with the Guild. I genuinely liked the Holy Trinity, but the information was on a need-to-know basis only. This was the first time I’d broken my rule.
