“Egghead?”

“Hey, babe.”

Love filled my heart at the sight of him.

It had been like that since he wrote me that poem, comparing me to a fractal design.

I thought the note was the most beautiful thing I ever read, so I stored it with all the other things I cherished and ignored him for the rest of the night.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to see you.”

“But, how?”

“What do you mean, how? I took a bus.”

“I mean, how did you find this place? It’s not exactly on Google Maps.”

“Your friends sent me the coordinates and snuck me in.”

My friends? What friends?

“Oh my god, this is so dangerous. You need to leave immediately,” I said anxiously.

“Well, I’m happy to see you too, sunshine,” he replied as he tenderly stroked my cheek through the crack in the cabin. “I brought you a surprise.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes, look behind me.” A woman bent down and stared at me tenderly.

“Mom?” I frowned in confusion. The sight of my mother triggered a faint feeling of wrongness in my muddled mind. A forgotten memory hidden in my subconscious that I brushed aside because I missed her so much.

“Hi, honey. How are you doing?” She reached out through the cracks of the cabin and touched my hand.

“Mom. How… How are you here? Where’s Dad?”

“I’m right here, Mousy.”

A man stood next to her holding my baby sister’s hand, and we were back in our apartment in San Diego.

“You made my favorite meal.” Tears filled my eyes as the delicious smell of lamb filled my nostrils. He used to prepare us this meal on Christmas Eve. I haven’t been able to eat it since they left us.

A memory gnawed at me. What was it? Why couldn’t I remember? Before I could delve deeper, however, my baby sister ran up to me to give me a hug.

“I missed you so much, Sarah. Let’s never be separated again.”

“I missed you too, Audrey. I can’t believe how big you got.”

“What do you mean?”

“The last time I was with you, you were a little baby.”

“No, I wasn’t. You saw me yesterday, silly.”

“I did?” I frowned, making me blink, and images of a rundown shack appeared, only to vanish.

“Is everything all right, honey?”
