“I don’t need protection.”

“Of course you do. Who do you think you’re talking to, here? I know what the rules for intelligence officers are.”

I ignored him and put on my coat. I didn’t care if I got in trouble for it or not, no one was keeping me from seeing Moose.

“You’re playing with fire, Sarah.”

“Fuck that and fuck them. If they want to come at me, let them. It’s not like they haven’t tried to break me before.”

“I will not let you throw your life away for a boy. I forbid you to walk out that door.” Ghost grabbed my arm to stop me, and the temperature in the room cooled down several degrees.

“You have three seconds to get your hands off me, old man,” I told him as he and I stared at each other coldly.

“W-What’s going on here? Release her immediately, Christian. You know better than to touch her like that.” A petite woman with salt and pepper hair said as she came rushing into the room.

I didn’t lower my fists until her husband let go of me.

Ghost was an extremely good fighter and going toe to toe with him wasn’t my idea of fun. But he was way over the line, here.

“I’m not disobeying anyone. And even if I were, neither you nor the Guild can tell me whom I can and cannot talk to.”

“Sarah,” Connie began, only for me to interrupt her.

“NO! I’m done cowering in the dark like this. The Guild is a fucking dictatorship, and we are in the US of A.”

“You’re acting like a child,” Ghost stated.

“No, I’m not. I’m acting like a girl who wants to go have dinner with her friend without it being the end of the world.” I grabbed my keys to the Ducati Panigale.

“Why are you not standing up to them instead of giving me a hard time? These people you’re bowing to are rotten. Why are you following them and saying nothing? If I were you, I’d take a long hard look at myself!” I screamed as I stormed out of their place.

“Sarah, wait!” Connie hurriedly ran after me to stop me, but I shut off her pleading by putting on my helmet, revved up the motorcycle, and lit out of there.

I got to the pier with fifteen minutes to spare, parked my bike, and walked to a remote area of the wharf before sitting on the sand.

This was the first time I’ve been to the beach in forever and the ocean had me mesmerized. I listened to the birds chirping as they flew over the pier. They were so relaxed and free, it made me envy them.

My phone rang for the tenth time, and I didn’t bother checking it because I knew it would be Connie again. She’d tearfully left me pleading messages to come back, and not make any stupid decision.

This was so much drama for ONE meal. I just wanted to see Eric. Was that too much to ask?

A body dropped next to me.

I’d noticed the drunkard the minute I parked my bike and kept an eye on him, but so far, he’d been harmless. The man was so inebriated he could barely stand.

“Hey pretty girl. How about you and I have fun?” He got closer, and I got a good whiff of the smell of booze clinging to his pores like a crazy ex-girlfriend.

“I’m good, thanks.”

“Awww come on. Don’t be like that. I can show you a good time.”

I stared straight ahead and ignored him, hoping he’d get the message.

“You have such beautiful hair.”

A hand grabbed his wrist just as he was about to touch me.
