“We need to head for the west wing. The concentration of soldiers is stronger there. I think they may be guarding something important.”

“Copy that, Captain.”

“Do you need help, Baby Boy?” Romano inquired.

“No.”

I concentrated on lifting the unconscious girl into the truck and sat with her in my arm.

When she began crying in her sleep, I panicked. Not knowing what else to do, I softly crooned an old Russian lullaby that my father used to sing to me whenever I had nightmares.

I must have sung the song three times before her small body passed out from pain and exhaustion.

One second, she was crying in my arms, and the next, she went limp.

“Is she all right?” Romano asked.

“No, she isn’t.” I’m not sure she ever will be.

We drove off in silence when the men came back after finishing my father’s dismantlement order.

When Romano hit a bump on the road, Elise whimpered, and I lost it.

“Will you drive more carefully, motherfucker?” I shouted.

“Vaffanculo ragazzo,” the Italian replied, which didn’t help defuse the situation.

You might as well know that in my family, I was the most hot-headed. I was a ticking time bomb and lost my temper at the drop of a dime. Whenever that happened, I became shortsighted. But even for me, this wasn’t normal.

We finally arrived at our destination, and everyone jumped off the truck until there was only me and the girl.

“Give her to me,” Ash ordered gently.

When I held on to her like a bear with its cub, he chided, “Vas,” in a big brother tone that finally penetrated through my thick skull.

I gave her to him and jumped down. Before I could take her back, however, Elias turned a corner, and the anger boiling inside me erupted like a volcano.

“I can’t fucking believe you left the women back there in their filth and excrement. Why the fuck are we warriors if we’re going to let those who need our help fend for themselves?”

“Get out of my face, Baby Boy,” Muller replied dangerously, but I was too angry to listen to the warning in his tone.

I grabbed the captain’s arm, and the six-foot-tall Asian caught my wrists and hook kicked my knee, abdomen, and the side of my head in three lightning strikes, making the world go black.

I wish I could tell you that was the end of my acting like a donkey’s ass, but it wasn’t.

Another fight erupted when I learned Ash was going to leave her alone in that warehouse while we dutifully drove off.

And this time, I was ready. I fought dirty and mean.

It took Romano, Olek, and Larsen to get me in that truck. I’d have totally jumped ship if those fuckers hadn’t sat on me to get me to behave.

The joke was on them, however. Because I lost them the first chance I got.

I calmed myself long enough to fool them into letting me go. I then hotwired a car, and drove all the way to where my brother was staying before making him take me to her (and yes, he was delighted to see me).

I creeped on her for days until I got a chance to be alone with her. There were tubes coming out from every pore, and the doctors wrapped a white bandage around her head.

Ash informed me they operated on her to relieve some of the pressure in her brain. She was currently in an induced coma to let it rest.

I stood there, staring at her in turmoil, and felt pain when I gently took her hand in mine.

“It’s going to be all right, malyshka. You are safe. No one will ever hurt you again. I promise you this on my life.”
