Chapter 121

‘EstelleDoyle does know I don’t have high confidence in Frederick Beck’s profile, doesn’t she, Poe?’ Bradshaw said.

‘I told her, Tilly.’

‘Because if I’d had more time I could have done a much better job.’

‘I told her that too.’

‘And his ex-colleagues were curiously reluctant to talk to us.’

‘Probably don’t want to receive a pressed flower in the post.’

‘All I’m saying is the profile of his mental, emotional and personality characteristics is based on incomplete data. I mean, we know he’s an organised, rather than disorganised, killer, but even the FBI’s Behavioural Analysis Unit could have worked that out.’

‘Not a fan of the BAU, huh?’

‘And because he hasn’t had a footprint in the United Kingdom for several years, the usual sources of information weren’t large enough for any statistically relevant data mining. We couldn’t use forensic homology as there has been no offender like this before and—’

‘She knows, Tilly.’

‘She does?’

‘Well, I didn’t use those exact words, but she got my drift.’

‘What words did you use, Poe?’

‘I said, “Tilly says it’s a bit crap, but it’s the best she can do for now”.’

‘I wouldneveruse that word, Poe!’

‘She knows that too.’

‘If I could just have one more day I’m sure I could make it better,’ Bradshaw said, biting her lip.

‘You can rework it after Estelle’s been through it, Tilly. She’s actually met the man. She’s bound to have some fresh insight.’

‘I’m going to talk to her.’

‘Sit down, Tilly.’

‘But why, Poe? I should be there in case she has any questions.’

‘I agree.’

‘Why won’t you let me go and find her then?’

Poe pointed down the long corridor. Doyle was hurrying along it. ‘Because it looks like she’s coming to find us.’
